Wikistories pilot in Indonesia/Final

Summary edit

The Wikimedia Foundation launched the Wikistories feature on the Indonesian Wikipedia on July 4, 2022. Wikistories is a feature that allows contributors to create short content like stories using articles from Wikipedia and images from Wikimedia Commons. With this feature, Wikipedia contributors can share knowledge in modern ways.

This feature has been introduced to several GLAM institutions and GLAM communities in four cities, namely Medan, Yogyakarta, Makassar, and Banjarmasin. The choice of cities was based on the locations of GLAM entities that we have partnered with and also new cities to visit as part of engaging new GLAM institutions. This feature has also been socialized online via Zoom and YouTube "Bincang GLAM" livestream to reach more entities that cannot be visited in person.

A Wikistories contest for GLAM was held as a way to enrich Wikistories on the topic of GLAM institutions in Indonesia. The introduction ended at the Indonesia Open GLAM Conference 2022, which was held over two days in November. More than 50 people participated in all these outreach activities, and more than 400 new Wikistories were created.

Medan outreach edit

Museum Uang Sumatera edit

Medan was the first city of the outreach plan. On July 14, 2022, we met Wiene, representatives from Museum Uang Sumatera at Toast Cafe Medan. Wiene is the Deputy Chairman of the Museum Uang Sumatera. On that day, he also invited six students who were doing internships at the museum. Museum Uang Sumatra is a local museum that has been partnering with us since 2018 and is still involved in the growth and expansion of Wikimedia Indonesia's GLAM project.

We began the explanation with Wikimedia and its projects, especially Wikimedia projects that are still related to GLAM. While explaining, we asked them to use their smartphones and try creating Wikistories. The most frequent obstacle was that their browser did not support them when they wanted to create a Wikipedia account. Hence, we asked them to use another browser, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla.

Museum Daerah Deli Serdang edit

We visited Museum Daerah Deli Serdang on July 15, 2022. At this museum, we met the Head of the Museum and the museum technical staff. Since we had collaborated with the Deli Serdang Museum previously, the Wikistories introduction as a new feature of Wikipedia became easier for the two representatives of the museum to understand.

Museum Kota Tebing Tinggi edit

We visited Museum Kota Tebing Tinggi on July 15, 2022. Some of the collections in this museum also did not have any explanations (descriptions). We spent time in the museum to explain Wikimedia and its projects. They were very interested in digitization after hearing our explanation. They said they wanted to complete the description of their collections first before working with GLAM Wikimedia Indonesia. From this outreach, no Wikistories were created.

Blogger Medan, Alliance Francaise, and Medan Heritage Society edit

This outreach was held on July 16, 2022, at the Alliance Francaise Medan, and 14 people attended. Since the representatives of the three GLAM-related communities were not yet familiar with Wikimedia and the project, we provided a brief introduction before trying the Wikistories. We held a small quiz at the end of the session, and the winners were awarded some merchandise.

In this outreach, we also provided some details about the Wikistories for GLAM Competition, which will be held in September.

Yogyakarta outreach edit

History of Java Museum edit

The first GLAM institution in Yogyakarta we visited was the History of Java Museum. History of Java Museum is part of the D'Topeng Kingdom Group. Two museum representatives welcomed us, and one of them was the person responsible for managing the social media of the History of Java Museum. We discussed whether there are museum collections that can be digitized and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, followed by Wikistories introduction.

Museum Dewantara Kirti Griya edit

Museum Dewantara Kirti Griya is a museum located in Yogyakarta. This museum stores various letters of Ki Hadjar Dewantara and has previously collaborated with GLAM Wikimedia Indonesia. We were greeted by several museum employees and talked about the museum's collections. We explained about Wikistories before trying out this feature.

UPT Museum & Perpustakaan Museum Radya Pustaka edit

The next day, we moved to Surakarta. We visited Museum Keris and asked for permission to meet with representatives from the museum. Apparently, the Keris Museum and Radya Pustaka Museum are in one UPT (Technical Implementation Unit). We introduced Wikimedia to the Head of the UPT. However, he did not seem too sure about sharing the museum's collections with the public. He has concerns that no one will visit the museum if the museum's collections are open to the public.

After that, we were invited to visit the Radya Pustaka Museum Library. There, we met the librarian. There were lots of archives in the Dutch and Javanese languages. We once again introduced Wikimedia and expressed our desire to digitize the library collection. Librarians were very interested and agreed that the library collection should be open to the public. However, they said it would be very difficult to talk to their officials about this.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Museum Lokananta edit

Museum Lokananta was the destination we visited after the Radya Pustaka Museum. At Museum Lokananta, we saw a collection of songs by Indonesian musicians on several cassettes and gramophones. We explained Wikimedia and GLAM to the museum representatives. We also expressed our intention that the Museum Lokananta will share data items and collections that are free of copyright to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. However, museum representatives were still unsure, especially regarding copyright issues. He said that he would like to speak to his superiors first about this and will let us know if Museum Lokananta wants to work with GLAM Wikimedia Indonesia in the future.

From this outreach, no Wikistories were created.

Komunitas Malam Museum edit

On Saturday, we met GLAM-related community, Komunitas Malam Museum, at SINERGI Co Working Space, Yogyakarta. A few days earlier, we distributed outreach posters on Wikimedia Indonesia's social media channels. There were several people who had registered and originated from outside Komunitas Malam Museum. However, none of them finally attended. The participants who attended were six representatives from the Komunitas Malam Museum only.

In the beginning, we introduced GLAM and Wikimedia to the participants, followed by an experiment on Wikistories. They had several suggestions regarding Wikistories, including the description column could be moved around, and the media (photo) that would be used could be edited.

Makassar outreach edit

Museum La Galligo/Fort Rotterdam edit

On August 18, 2022, we visited Museum La Galligo, which is still in the Fort Rotterdam area. Unfortunately, the museum staff was participating in other activities, and we were told to go around the museum with a guide. If we wanted to talk to them, we were told to wait until noon.

After walking around the museum and waiting until 1 pm, the museum staff had not arrived at the museum. Therefore, we decided to move on to the next destination.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Balai Bahasa Sulawesi Selatan edit

We moved to Balai Bahasa Sulawesi Selatan. On this visit, we were accompanied by two people from the Makassar Heritage Society. These two people are also contributors to the Makassar language Wiktionary.

At Balai Bahasa Sulawesi Selatan, we saw a huge collection of Makassar language dictionaries. We asked how several Makassarese words are used and how to translate them into Indonesian. The staff of Balai Bahasa satisfactorily answered our questions.

Representatives from Balai Bahasa Makassar also like and want to work with GLAM Wikimedia Indonesia. They agreed that knowledge should be shared widely.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Balai Pelestarian Nilai Budaya Sulawesi Selatan edit

BPNB South Sulawesi is still in the same neighborhood as Balai Bahasa Sulawesi Selatan. BNPB has several collections related to culture, such as one of the traditional clothes of South Sulawesi.

At BPNB, we met with a BNPB administrator. We requested permission to make presentations on GLAM and Wikimedia. He seems interested in working with GLAM Wikimedia Indonesia. However, he is not the one who can make decisions. Therefore, he will talk to his manager first.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Balla Lompoa Museum edit

The next morning (19 August 2022), we visited the Balla Lompoa Museum. When we got there, we couldn't meet anyone who could make decisions. Therefore, we were asked to come back in the afternoon. So, we moved to another destination first, namely Benteng Somba Opu and Museum Karaeng Pattingalloang.

In the afternoon, we returned to the museum. We received an explanation about the museum's collections from the museum curator. We also explained our intention to come there and that we want to collaborate and help upload their collections so that the wider community can access them. The curator of the museum was interested. However, he said that we had to get permission from the local government first. We also met the 38th King of Gowa, Andi Kumala Idjo. He gave us his mobile number and said we could contact him with any questions regarding the museum's collections.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Benteng Somba Opu and Museum Karaeng Pattingalloang edit

On the same day, we also visited Museum Karaeng Pattingalloang. On that day, there were no museum administrators because they were on duty in another city. We decided to document the museum and Fort Somba Opu, which is also around there.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Sobat Budaya Makassar and Makassar Heritage Society edit

We met Sobat Budaya Makassar and Makassar Heritage Society at MILES Coworking Space on August 20, 2022. Like visits with communities in the city beforehand, we first explained about GLAM and Wikimedia before trying Wikistories.

Besides trying Wikistories, they also asked how to upload their own photos and use them on Wikistories. Therefore, they also learned how to upload photos on Wikimedia Commons. After successfully uploading photos on Commons and creating Wikistories, we invite them to take part in a quiz. At the end of the event, we also gave some information regarding the Wikistories competition for GLAM.

Banjarmasin outreach edit

Museum WASAKA (Waja Sampai Ka Puting) edit

We visited Museum WASAKA on August 25, 2022. The museum administrator was not there, so we decided to go around the museum and take some photos.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Museum Makam Sultan Suriansyah edit

On August 25, 2022, apart from visiting the WASAKA Museum, we also visited Museum Makam Sultan Suriansyah. This museum is not very big, only a small building in front of the tomb. From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Dinas Perpustakaan dan Arsip Daerah Kalimantan Selatan edit

After visiting Museum Makam Sultan Suriansyah, we visited the South Kalimantan Regional Library and Archives Service. We asked about the archives there. The librarian said they had no intention of opening the collection to the public. Visitors must come to the library to find out about their collections.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Museum Lambung Mangkurat edit

The next day (August 26, 2022), we visited Museum Lambung Mangkurat. We were told to wait for a while to meet with the museum representative. While waiting, we went around to see the museum collections. Until finally, it was time to meet with museum representatives, and we explained the purpose of our visit to the museum. They refused to cooperate and said that their collection was already stored on a hard disk.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Balai Bahasa Kalimantan Selatan edit

After visiting the Museum Lambung Mangkurat, we visited Balai Bahasa Kalimantan Selatan together with representatives of the Banjarmasin Wikimedia Community.

Balai Bahasa Kalimantan Selatan promised to discuss Banjar-language grammar clearly at an online meeting.

From this visit, no Wikistories were created.

Blogger Banjarmasin edit

We met the Banjarmasin Blogger community at IDR Space on August 27, 2022. Before meeting the community, we distributed posters on social media GLAM and Wikimedia Indonesia. Apart from that, we also sent emails to several universities in Banjarmasin regarding this outreach. However, no one replied.

This outreach was only attended by four people. However, they were very active. They asked about how to contribute to Wikimedia projects and were very interested in Wikistories. They also learn how to upload photos to Wikimedia Commons.

Zoom edit

Apart from visiting several cities in Indonesia, we also held online outreach using Zoom. The first online outreach was held on September 10, while the next online outreach took place on September 14.

The first outreach was attended by representatives from the History of Java Museum, Medan Wikimedia Community, Komunitas Jelajah, and the Indonesian Islamic Art Museum. Meanwhile, the second outreach was only attended by the Wikimedia communities only.

Bincang GLAM YouTube livestream edit

Bincang GLAM is a casual talk show that discusses a specific topic about GLAM. In this episode, Bincang GLAM talked about WIkistories and Wikistories competitions for GLAM. Bincang GLAM was held on October 2, 2022, and was broadcast live on Wikimedia Indonesia's YouTube channel. We also invited one of the Wikistories competition participants and one Wikistories ambassador from the Foundation. More than 40 people watched this event.

Wikistories for GLAM Competition edit

The Wikistories for GLAM Competition was held from September 17 to October 8, 2022. This competition has been echoed at every visit to both GLAM institutions and the GLAM community. Information about this competition was distributed in the internal WhatsApp group, Wikimedia Indonesia's social media channels, and emails of the participants who attended the outreach.

There were 23 participants who registered in this competition. However, only 4 people finally took part in the Wikistories competition. This competition resulted in the upload of 386 Wikistories and 929 photos to Wikimedia Commons. Winners were announced on October 15 with the following results.

First place winner (User:Triwahyuni.o of Perpustakaan SMPN 5 Padang) was awarded a tablet; 2nd place winner (User:Hernawanwan of Komunitas Malam Museum) was awarded a smartphone; and the 3rd place winner (User:Faa.story of History of Java Museum) awarded a smartwatch. The three winners also received an invitation to attend Indonesia Open GLAM Conference 2022 in Jakarta.

Indonesia Open GLAM Conference 2022 edit

The Indonesia Open GLAM Conference 2022 was held on November 5–6, 2022. This conference was attended by 46 people at The Akmani Hotel, Jakarta. The event was carried out properly and on time in accordance with the planned sequence of events.

In the Wikistories section, we have explained how Wikistories features can be used to promote GLAM institutions. The problem with this session was many of the participants were elderly. It is a slight difficult for them to understand and try this feature.

Apart from that, there were also participants who experienced problems with the browser they were using. However, we suggested they change the browser. Input from participants will be explained further in the survey section.

Difficult	When compared to "stories" products on other platforms, it's still very difficult. But very understandable because it is still beta. Not familiar yet.
Quite difficult	At that time, I wanted to take part in a Wikistories contest and misunderstood the terms of the competition in the section on the conformity of the photo description with the uploaded photo. I guess that description is self-made. Because it's still a beta feature, you need to configure it before using it. I need more time to understand than other friends need.

For the future competition, it's better to be more selective about assessing the originality of works
This is very helpful because the presence of Wikistories makes it easier for other users to view uploaded photos visually. This is also media exposure for related institutions.

It would be easier if these Wikistories could be displayed on Wikipedia article pages without having to log in to an account first.
Hopefully, the features can be further improved and can be better known by many people.
Some photos are mixed. Maybe the categorization can be more specific. I'm afraid there will be misinformation due to ignorance.
If I may suggest, please make Wikistories easier to use, and there are tutorials to help users.
The Wikistories should provide examples of movement or understanding in the form of training for students and libraries or museums so that digitizing history is very important to facilitate access in the future.

Summary of Wikistories for GLAM survey edit

In the Wikistories outreach, most of the participants (67.9% of people) were new Wikipedia users. They are employees of one of the GLAM institutions, members of the GLAM community, and also the general public. Most of the participants (42.9%) were in the age range of 18–25 years, and a small number of participants (7.1%) were over 50 years old. As many as 78.6% of participants only created 1–5 Wikistories. According to the majority of participants (42.9%), creating Wikistories is quite easy because the materials needed are already available on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. The features participants wanted most were the feature for uploading video content, the feature for uploading photos directly to stories (without going through Wikimedia Commons), and the feature for editing text and images more freely.

Most of the participants (46.4%) had heard of Wikistories before this Conference. However, they had never used them. Regarding "Open Data", most of the participants (32.1%) do not really understand and apply open data in their institutions. Half of the participants (50%) have understood and applied copyright in their institution, while the other half still have to learn about it. Most of the participants (32.1%) did not understand the use of metadata in GLAM institutional collections. Most of the participants (46.4%) already know about Wikidata but have not used it. The conference topic the participants most anticipated was Copyright on Protection and Democratic Freedom (35.1%).

This activity should be carried out intensively and continuously so that more users understand the importance of data openness, etc.
I have lots of information related to the work of nature and the culture of the nation. It is still stored in a place/location where its security information has not been touched. If later needed, I will gladly help.
Next time, there should be an introductory moment for all participants (if the participant number is small). Or there is a special sharing session in the field, for example, the museum itself, etc, so there is an exchange of ideas about the problems experienced by each institution. After that, we'll discuss what recommendations can be used to solve the problem.
There should be an introductory session for each participant (the committee accommodates introductions) so that participants have plenty of time to get acquainted other than during the event because it is hoped that with this conference, the communication of participants after the event will be maintained and they will remember and get to know each other.
Please make this event sustainable with an even bigger symposium. The place of implementation is outside Jakarta, as well as inviting policy-making officials. Hopefully, what Wikimedia is planning can run smoothly.
The speaker's session time should be longer.

The Indonesian Open GLAM Conference was very good at introducing the Wikimedia Foundation program. Furthermore, please increase collaboration with the community, especially the Deli Serdang Museum, so that the Deli Serdang Museum can be assisted in organizational programs.

I am very happy to be able to take part in this activity because it provides new information for me and my institution. I'm very interested in Wikibase, but I still don't have a clear idea about Wikibase. What does it look like, how to use it, etc. Suggestions for the future maybe if there is sharing related to this, you can immediately display the application, too, so there can be an overview regarding the application. Hopefully, this event will continue to be an annual event to spread good impact for GLAM. The duration can be adjusted so as not to rush if the duration is condensed. This conference can be used for sharing with the GLAM forum for mutual collaboration, and Wikimedia can facilitate GLAM for data openness.

Summary of post-conference survey edit

The Indonesia Open GLAM Conference 2022 was well organized. The presentation sessions were useful and can be understood by the participants. Of the 22 participants, 10 people (45.5%) understood, and seven people (31.8%) really understood. The rest (5 people) didn't really understand the use of Wikistories. Most participants (17 people) felt that using Wikistories to promote GLAM institutions was quite easy, and 77.3% of participants would use Wikistories to promote their respective institutions. As many as 15 participants (68.2%) already understood enough about the use of Open Data after attending the presentation. Regarding Metadata, most of the participants (77.3%) had a good understanding of how to use it. For most of the participants, the most memorable and useful presentation sessions were on Copyright, UNESCO Memory of the World, and Wikistories for GLAM. Participants felt that the directions from the committee during the conference were clear enough. Participants gave suggestions that this conference should be held once a year, add more time for presentation sessions, and open the conference with introductions between institutional representatives.

The method used when we introduced Wikistories was introducing Wikimedia and GLAM through a slide deck. After that, while explaining Wikistories, we asked the participants to take their smartphones, create a Wikipedia account, then try Wikistories. Later, we asked them verbally about their impressions when using the feature. Then, we continued with a quiz on Kahoot if there were more than five participants. The three participants with the highest points will get a souvenir. We also provided a link to join the WFG group chat on Whatsapp and also promoted the WFG competition.

Offline outreach to GLAM institutions and communities in four cities and online outreach edit

The visits to the four cities that were planned at the beginning were successfully carried out without any changes. We also managed to meet and introduce Wikistories to GLAM institutions and communities in destination cities (Medan, Yogyakarta, Makassar, and Banjarmasin).

More than 100 Wikistories have been made edit

The initial target for Wikistories outreach for GLAM was 100 Wikistories. However, at the end of the Wikistories for GLAM outreach period, 459 Wikistories had been made.

Indonesia Open GLAM Conference 2022 edit

The Indonesia Open GLAM Conference 2022 was held successfully for two days (November 5–6, 2022) and brought in speakers and participants according to their expertise. At the conference, we also collected feedback from the attendees, both regarding the conference and Wikistories.

What did not work edit

Sobat Budaya promoted Wikistories edit

Sobat Budaya headquartered in Jakarta was not stable enough until the end of the Wikistories outreach. We have contacted them via their social media and email. However, we have received no reply. The only Sobat Budaya (regional) who responded to our invitation was Sobat Budaya Makassar. Sobat Budaya Makassar was also present during the offline outreach.

Only 50% of attendees participated in the WFG competition edit

The participants who took part in the outreach were 56 people. The number of registrants for the competition was 23 people. However, only 4 participants finally made Wikistories.

Other recommendation edit

Recommendations from the survey results need to be followed up by the Foundation's Inuka team in terms of improving features in Wikistories.

Next step and opportunities edit

WMID will coordinate with the Inuka team for the next steps with regard to Wikistories development. WMID will coordinate with the Inuka team to see the potential of adopting Wikistories in Wikimedia Commons and get responses from general Wikimedia Commons contributors in Indonesia.
