Background

Towards the end of the Wikistories pilot in Indonesia, we proposed a professional development event to promote Wikistories as a way to document and share built, natural and cultural heritage. As a professional development event, the content will go beyond the new Wikistories format to cover broader questions about heritage on Wikimedia, such as documenting heritage at risk, organizing photography contests, and adopting an open-access policy.

The movement typically uses an institutional partnership model to engage with museums but requires substantial investment from both sides. Recently, we have seen affiliates who directly engage GLAM professionals, as individuals, through in-depth training programs, but the retention and completion rates have yet to be high. We want to recruit and retain GLAM professionals as Wikimedia contributors through recurring events that serve a common purpose. Just as the 'add citation' task is perfect for librarians in the twice-yearly #1Lib1Ref campaign, we believe that Wikistories is an exciting and accessible task for cultural and heritage professionals. Once GLAM professionals are contributors, they will better understand the Wikimedia platform and be more receptive to institutional partnerships. We will provide opportunities to the following organizations:

• The professional association of the International Museums Council (ICOM). With a global membership of 40,000 museum professionals, ICOM is active in Indonesia.
• Professional association of the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). ICOMOS has a global membership of over 10,000 cultural heritage professionals and appears active in Indonesia.
• Indonesian Museum Association
• Wikimedia Indonesia GLAM partners
• Sobat Budaya, a group of heirloom lovers who have collected digital data and information for more than 34,000 Indonesian cultural heritage objects, accessed at the Indonesian Cultural Digital Library at budaya-indonesia.org.

Scope

The event will be focused on Indonesia but could be co-organized with the World Heritage Wiki group to leverage their expertise and facilitate replication to other countries.

• Create short stories to make your legacy more visible on Wikipedia
• Learn about other opportunities to share legacy content on the Wikimedia platform

Project output

• Drive engagement with Wikistory in key pilot communities
• Bring more cultural and heritage workers into the Wikimedia movement through accessible and engaging assignments
• Increase engagement with heritage expertise, Sobat Budaya, with the Wikimedia platform

Main results

• One professional association contributes to the program and promotes the event
• Sobat Budaya became a presenter at the event and invited contributors to take part
• 50 people took part in the event, and 100 Wikistories have been created
• The highlight of the event was an open Indonesian GLAM conference.

Timeline

Wikistories outreach (July–August 2022)

• This outreach will visit organizations in 4 cities in Indonesia (Medan, Yogyakarta, Banjarmasin, and Makassar) to approach and invite them to participate in Wikistories. Institutions that are interested in participating will join later at an open Indonesian GLAM conference meeting as well as selected Wikistories contest participants.

Wikistories campaign (September 2022)

• 50 people from Sobat Budaya and the public can collaborate to produce 100 Wikistories.

Indonesian Open GLAM Conference (November 2022)

• This conference is a meeting place for GLAM institutions. There will be 40 attendees at this conference. Not only limited to fellow GLAM institutions, but collaborators from Sobat Budaya will also participate in this conference.
• Each attendee will make at least three Wikistories after the conference. There will be at least 120 Wikistories as the outcome.
• Materials that were present at the conference included: GLAM: hopes and challenges, how to increase the visibility of GLAM institutions to the internet, openness, Creative Commons and Public Domain Mark, Wikimedia Commons and structured data, Wikisource, Wikidata, and Wikistories.
