Wikisource Loves Manuscripts/Report
Wikisource Loves Manuscripts is a call-to-action and a project to support the digitization of manuscripts on Wikisource.
Activities
editVarious activities have been carried out in the WILMA program over the past year. Chronologically, the activities that have taken place can be seen on the Updates page. The main activities of this program can be outlined as follows.
Manuscript Digitization
editThe digitization of manuscripts is the core activity of the Wikisource Loves Manuscript program. In line with the initial planning, the digital preservation of manuscripts at risk of damage and destruction due to poor maintenance by collection owners has been successfully conducted in three province regions: Bali, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and West Sumatra, with total 10 cities included. The activities were carried out in stages throughout 2023 and have resulted in more than 28,000 pages of manuscripts from 10 different collections (see statistics). Currently, these digitized manuscripts are available on Wikimedia Commons for free and open access by the general public. The list of manuscripts can also be viewed at the this report page.
In its implementation, the digitization activities were conducted by our partners in each area, consisting of academic experts, professional manuscript photographers, and supports from the communities with a high interest in manuscripts. To achieve quality and criteria in technical aspects and the digitization process, the team from PPIM always provided support during the execution by the field teams.
All the manuscript digitization activities in the field have been documented and covered by both national and local media. There has also been coverage from international sources. This appears as a positive response from the general media audience and indicates that the interest and awareness of manuscript preservation in the community is increasing (see Media Coverage section).
Manuscript Transcription
editThe transcription of manuscripts resulting from digitalization is carried out on the Wikisource platform. Due to the diversity of scripts and languages in the manuscripts, the transcription process is not limited to just one Wikisource domain but involves three. These include Wikisource Bali for manuscripts in Balinese language and script, Wikisource Jawa for those in Javanese language and script, and Wikisource Indonesia for manuscripts in Arab-Malay script and in Malay and Indonesian languages. The use of these different Wikisource platforms is also due to the dependency on specific tools and features related to scripts and languages available on each respective platform.
The transcription process is expected to be carried out by both new and existing volunteers who have an interest in the scripts and languages contained in the manuscripts. Due to limitations in both technical and non-technical skills, including the ability to read indigenous scripts, type with indigenous scripts, and knowledge of using the Wikisource platform, it is necessary to conduct workshops for initial introduction. Following this, a Proofread-a-thon activity was implemented, which was expected to measure activity and capability in the transcription process of these manuscripts.
Workshops
editVarious workshops for transcribing different manuscript genres on Wikisource have been carried out four times, covering locations such as Bali, Yogyakarta, West Sumatra, and Jakarta. Alongside inviting participants to engage in these activities with guidance from Wikimedian in Residence instructors, we've also collaborated with and received substantial support from Wikimedia Indonesia, Wikimedia communities in Denpasar and Yogyakarta, as well as other dedicated individuals and groups whose contributions can't all be individually named. In addition to the onsite and in-person workshops, a group of students from the Institut Ilmu Al Quran (IIQ) Jakarta conducted an online Wikisource workshop, broadening opportunities for new users to participate in transcribing available Arab-Malay manuscripts. Across the various workshops, a total of 108 participants, encompassing both new and experienced users, actively took part. For more detailed information pelase go to the Workshop page.
Besides the aforementioned workshops, another workshop has been conducted in collaboration between WILMA and UNESCO, which has provided elaborate support for this activity. The theme focused on the Babad Diponegoro manuscripts as a collective memory heritage of the world.
Workshops were also conducted at the Wikimania 2023 event in Singapore, where we displayed samples of the diverse Indonesian manuscripts in the main hall of the event. We also had the opportunity to showcase the implementation of the digitization process using a full set of equipment in the field.
Proofread-a-thon
editThe Proofread-a-thon is a follow-up activity for manuscripts that have been digitized from various regions. After making these manuscripts available on Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource, a small transcription competition was held. Participants were categorized based on the manuscript genre in Balinese, Javanese, and Arab-Malay languages and scripts, not by location. This allowed participants from various regions in Indonesia to engage in different manuscript genres. The event was conducted online from September 25 to October 31, 2023, with a total of 26 participants across all three genres. Top participants were eligible for attractive and exclusive prizes. For more detailed information, visit the special WILMA Proofread-a-thon 2023 page.
Community & Institutional Engagements
editDuring the WILMA program, we have established good relationships with various institutions and communities in different areas. In addition, we have received support from individual volunteers who have willingly devoted their time and energy to our activities. The support we received includes not only technical but also administrative assistance. Furthermore, the moral support and encouragement they continuously provide are greatly appreciated by us. We could not run all these programs without their involvement, both directly and indirectly.
The following are the communities and institutions that have collaborated to make the WILMA program series successful across various regions:

Special Acknowledgement:
- Wikisource Loves Manuscript extends heartfelt thanks to Wikimedia Indonesia for their support in facilitating the design of this program's logos. We specifically express our gratitude to Dwi Satria, the designer who crafted this logo, making it a symbol with special meaning for the manuscript preservation program. We also express our gratitude to Benny Lin for supporting various technical and non-technical aspects in optimizing Wikisource in different languages and scripts.
Media Coverage
editThe media coverage of the WILMA program has been effectively carried out through an official partnership with TEMPO Media Group. The varied exposure of each conducted activity has provided more insight to the public. The output in the form of documentary video offers a clear and factual depiction of the situation and conditions of the manuscript collections and their owners in the field. Both visually and narratively, these representations make the preservation efforts more lively and contextual.
In addition to the major coverage by our official partners, reporting has also been conducted by local media in various regions. This has been possible due to effective communication between our local team partners and the respective local media, ensuring activity releases are featured in the news. The support from local media has made this program more contextual, aligning with the socio-cultural conditions of the local communities.
WiLMa Learning Partners Network
editThe Wikisource Love Manuscripts (WiLMa) Learning Partners Network aims to foster collaboration among communities interested in digitizing and transcribing manuscripts. The project will provide the necessary support, training, and resources to enable participating communities to successfully undertake manuscript digitisation projects. For further detail about this activity, please go to this page.

Remaining funds
editIn the financial realization of this program, it turns out there is a remaining budget of USD 6,241. With this potential amount of funds, we plan to carry out several follow-up activities to continue building relationships with our partners across all regions. The two main activities are firstly, conducting manuscript transcription workshops/meetup on Wikisource with follow-ups in Bali, Yogyakarta, and West Sumatra. The expected outcome is an increase in transcription contributions from contributors in each area. Secondly, we plan to conduct workshops on compiling manuscript catalogs from collections in these three regions. This activity will not only produce catalogs and manuscript descriptions but also provide new insights and knowledge on the techniques of manuscript cataloging. Additionally, if possible, we aim to conduct outreach on the use of digitized manuscripts to potential parties and partners, to maximize the use of materials from this digitization project.
Result
editThe follow-up workshops and meetup activities were conducted in Yogyakarta, Padang, and Bali throughout 2024. However, the catalog production workshop could not be held with the community as planned. To address this, the WILMA team will finalize and publish a PDF version of the catalog at a later date, ensuring that the output remains accessible and beneficial to all stakeholders.
Metrics
editThe WILMA program has several key success targets that were determined at the start of the program. During its implementation over the past year, there have been challenges and obstacles, both technical and non-technical, on the ground and administratively. However, the program has generally been successful. The following metrics provide an overview of how this program can be evaluated.
Key Results | Achievements |
---|---|
New partnership with Manassa, the Indonesian professional association for archivists | A partnership with Manassa has been achieved through good communication and coordination, both directly and indirectly. We have received the necessary support in terms of human resources and information regarding access to collections in the three targeted locations. Moreover, we have also established additional collaborations with various higher education institutions, local government departments, and independent communities in the three regions. We have also been well assisted by Wikimedia Indonesia in terms of administrative support and communication with the Wikimedia community in each region. Additionally, the British Library has also been a good partner in sharing manuscripts that have been digitized from their collection. |
Three regional rescue missions organized in Indonesia which includes identifying and digitizing manuscripts | The mission to digitize manuscripts in the three regions has been carried out successfully. A number of collections, both privately owned and institutional, which were considered at risk of damage or lacking proper care, have been digitized by local teams consisting of academic experts and photographers, under the supervision of the WILMA team in Jakarta. |
30 new Wikisource contributors representing 3 regions | This number has been reached, where we have conducted workshops in each area with high enthusiasm from the participants. The list of participants can be seen here. |
20,000 manuscript pages uploaded to Wikimedia Commons | 28,371 manuscript pages from 218 collections have been digitized from three regions (see the statistics). This number exceeds the expected target. All the photos can be viewed here. |
PPIM produces and disseminates digitization guidelines for manuscripts under a CC-BY license | This target has been achieved with detailed guidelines created in Arabic, English, Hindi, Indonesian, and Spanish. |
