Wikipedia for Peace/Writing about SCI History 2020
Wikipedia for Peace Online: Writing about SCI History
28 August-4 September 2020
About the project
This is an online camp! A pandemic is spreading across the globe. Volunteers and activists are looking for new online spaces to use for peace and social justice. Wikipedia can be one of them! In this Wikipedia for Peace online camp, we will learn how to write Wikipedia articles and will get to know more about inspiring activists, events and organisations fighting for peace and non-violence connected to the organisation Service Civil International (SCI). SCI is turning 100 years old this year, so it's time to look at the history of the organisation.
A week of editing Wikipedia together and connecting! Every day we have ca. 3 hours in the afternoon (Central European Time) where we gather in the video platform Zoom. And in the mornings you can work individually or in small groups. You don’t have to have knowledge on Wikipedia already to join the project. We will be a group of 15 participants from around the world. We will meet online via video calls from 28 August-4 September 2020. Our common language will be English. Apart from editing Wikipedia and learning / discussing about the history of SCI and the peave movement, we will also get to know each other.
This project is organised by Service Civil International Switzerland in cooperation with the SCI Archives and Wikimedia Switzerland.
Agenda
August 28 | August 29 | August 30 | August 31 | September 1 | September 2 | September 3 | September 4 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Morning | Individual task: Introduce yourself: Send 3 photos that represent your life to our communication channel in order to introduce yourself. Also, pick an article from the article list that you want to write/edit. | Individual editing: Spend some time doing research for an article of your choice and writing it. Thomas is online in Zoom to help you in the process. | Free day / Self-organized activities: This is the day for you to ignore Zoom and to get out into the real life. However, the group could still decide to do things together also without our computers! :) | Individual editing: More editing of articles! Again, Thomas will be on Zoom to give you feedback and help you if you need anything with your last articles. | ||||
Afternoon (14.00-ca. 17.00 CET) |
Start of the project: We will get to know each other with a few interactive games. We will also talk about your expectations for the camp and how we want to work together as a group. And (if time is enough!) you will hear some basic facts about SCI as an organisation. | Introduction to SCI and to Wikipedia: Let's get this started! In this crash course, you will learn some basic understandings of what SCI is and how it is connected to the peace movement, you will get to know some of the people and organisations in our article list and of course you will learn the first basics how to edit Wikipedia articles. Heinz from the SCI Archives will join us and answer all your burning questions! | Check-in + More Introduction to Wikipedia: Now that you've made your first edits, here you will learn some more things that make your Wikipedia articles better. | Check-in + Q&A with Maria Ojuel + Workshop #1: Corona and the War Industry: We will first have a longer check-in to inspire each other about the people that we wrote about. Then, historian Maria Ojuel will join us for 30 minutes to tell us about the refgee relief work of SCI during the Spanish Civil War. Afterwards, we will discuss the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on us and the world, also getting to know how political leaders are using militarized language to tackle the pandemic and how the weapons industry is profiting off this crisis. | Check-in + Workshop #2: Volunteering and Racism: On this day, we will share again how the editing is going for us. Then we will take a critical look at (the history of) international volunteering and explore colonial and racists imagery and structures that can get reproduced in voluntary projects. | Open Space + Finishing our articles: What topics would you like to go deeper into? What can you share with the rest of the group? Throughout the week we will collect topics to talk about and in this "Open Space" participants have the opportunity to present and discuss things that they would like to bring up. Afterwards we will finish our last articles together! | Celebration + Evaluation: By this point, we will be Wikipedia heroes with many new and improved articles! We will use this time to celebrate and to evaluate the project together. | |
Evening | Free / Self-organized activities: Participants can always propose informal activities in the late afternoon and evening hours such as cooking together, watching a film together or just hanging out :) |
