Wikimania 2022 Local Meetup of WMTurkic edit

 
Wikimania 2022, Baku Meetup, 13 August

As part of Wikimania 2022, WMTurkic held a series of hybrid meetings, article writing competitions and presentations on 13-14 August 2022 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. This meeting also served as a venue for members to develop their planned programs, outreach activities, and other innovations in Wikimedia projects.

Kurmanbek (Caner) attended Wikimedia Summit 2022 Berlin as the representative of Wikimedians of Turkic Languages User Group. At the summit, the main Wikimedia Movement and the 2030 summit were discussed, while thematic communities etc. Wikimedians of Turkic Languages User Group was introduced.

As a result, it has been observed that the formation of the Wikimedia Movement is desired to be complemented by the opinions of all Wikimedia users, not just the opinions of a particular user community. Our participant Kurmanbek thinks that the Wikimedia Movement will have very positive results for the Wikimedians of Turkic Languages User Group. At the same time, the interest in the Wikimedians of Turkic Languages User Group was quite positive.

Wikidata Trainings For Turkic Wikimedians 2022 edit

Wikidata Trainings For Turkic Wikimedians 2022 was organized as training and conference days for representatives of Wikimedia projects in Turkic languages to develop and enrich their working skills on Wikimedia projects, especially Wikidata. The event was held at Üsküdar University in Istanbul, Turkey, between 21-23 October 2022, with the joint organization of Wikimedia UG Turkey & Turkic Community.

Outlines edit

  • Day 1 and Day 2
    • Wikidata-related presentations starting from beginner-level introduction to Wikidata.
    • Morning sessions allocated for training to understand how Wikidata items are created and how to query
    • Afternoon sessions allocated to presentations focusing on inspiring works based on Wikidata, and discussions about the future of Wikidata. Also, presentations of representatives of two other open-culture organizations in Turkey (Creative Commons Turkey and Yercizenler - Open Street Map Turkey).
  • Day 3
    • Presentations of representatives of Wikimedia communities to give the floor for inspiring each other's work
    • A presentation about the 2030 Movement Strategy implementation from an MCDC representative.

Results edit

Participants from the Turkic world and from various countries received detailed information about the work carried out in other Wikimedia projects, especially in Wikidata. Users in the Turkic world have started to contribute more to the Wikidata area. After this conference, it is considered by WMTurkic to repeat the meetings annually. In addition, university students working at the conference were motivated during the conference and established the first University Wikipedia Student Club in Turkey.

  • Three online meetings were organized in 2022, one of which was hybrid. At the meeting in May, preparations were discussed for the Istanbul Wikidata conference in October 2022. Representatives from Turkic groups gave briefings on the problems in their countries, their partnership research and work. Ideas were exchanged on the representative elections and agenda for Wikimania 2022, Wikimedia Summit Berlin and CEE meeting. The idea was offered on the development of joint projects and methods of cooperation in the future in a quadruple format, involving Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey. See details
  • Baku Meetup hybrid meeting was held in August. In the online meeting, Azerbaijan representatives as hosts made a presentation about their annual activities. In addition, local Wiki communities in Russia, Turkey (WMTR) and Georgia (WMGE) made mini-presentations about the latest developments and activities to the participants. Finally, there was an exchange of views on the current situation and what to do at the upcoming Wikidata Conference. See details
  • After the Wikidata Istanbul meeting, an online meeting was held with the participation of 17 people. In the meeting agenda: Wikidata ISTCON22 – post-conference notes and the publication date of the conference final report were discussed. The idea of making the conference traditional with a new name and organizing it annually was discussed. Also, the determination of the host country for the possible organization in 2023 was discussed. The activities and events were discussed to be carried out in this country in 2023, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Republic of Turkey. Lastly, the idea of Istanbul being a candidate to host 2024 Wikimania was discussed. See details
