Wikimedians of Persian User Group
The Wikimedians of Persian User Group (WPUG) is a community of volunteers serves to expand the Wikimedia Movement into the university ecosystem in Iran, with the goal of improving free knowledge in Persian Wikimedia projects. There are hundreds of universities in Iran comprised of tens of thousands of students. However, the ecosystem of these Iranian universities (students, professors, etc.) has very little awareness of the Wikimedia movement, its projects and goals. Thus, there exists a huge neglected capacity in this landscape. This volunteer group aims to enable and fulfill that untouched potential.

Focus, goals edit
We are going to focus on the academic ecosystem of Iran and enable its neglected potential for initiating active contributions, in order to expand the Wikimedia Movement's goals.
- Encouraging students to improve content related to their major on Wikipedia
- Integrating the Wikipedia Education Program in universities curriculums
- Encouraging teachers for reading Wikipedia in the classrooms
- Providing online and in person training courses in order to grow the academic Wikimedia community
- Activating interdisciplinary collaborations among students of different majors on Wikimedia projects
- Organizing museum tours for students to hold upload-a-thons in order to train them and make Commons better
- Organizing edit-a-thons for students to upload old free books on Wikisource
- Collaborating with student associations of various disciplines to participate them in Wikimedia projects
- Facilitating inter-university collaborations to hold Wikimedia activities
- Creating friendship and collaborative projects between user-students studying foreign languages with wiki communities and affiliates of the same languages
History edit
Since 2016, outreach activities were founded at a large university in Iran. The activities focused on spreading Education Program. After seven years of continuous activity, now an independent and creative community has been formed that expands the activities related to the Wikimedia movement in the Iranian academia.[1]
