The "Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos" (WPWP) initiative in Arusha was part of a global campaign aimed at enriching Wikipedia articles by adding relevant images. Organized by the Wikimedians of Arusha, this event spanned August 2023, encouraging participants to contribute visual content to enhance the quality and appeal of Wikipedia pages.
Goals
- Expand Content Coverage:
Increase the visual content on Wikipedia articles, particularly those related to Tanzanian culture and heritage.
- Grow and Engage the Community:
Involve more community members in Wikimedia projects through a visually engaging activity.
- Strengthen Capacities:
Provide training on how to upload and integrate images into Wikipedia articles.
- Raise Awareness and Promote Inclusiveness:
Highlight the importance of visual content in knowledge sharing and ensure diverse representation in the images contributed.
Number of Participants
The event saw participation from over 33 individuals, including photographers, students, cultural enthusiasts, and Wikimedia volunteers.
Event Outcomes
- Content Creation:
Over 355 images were added to Wikipedia articles, significantly enhancing the visual representation of Tanzanian culture. Participants uploaded new photos to Wikimedia Commons.
- Community Engagement:
Conducted 1 workshops and training sessions on image uploading and Wikipedia editing. 5 new contributors joined the Wikimedians of Arusha community.
- Capacity Building:
Provided training on photo uploading, image licensing, and article editing. Developed resources and tutorials to support ongoing contributions.

Outreach activities highlighted the role of images in enriching Wikipedia, attracting diverse participants.
