There has been some change over time in these definitions. The most recent active definitions are at the top, and there is some duplication in these similar lists.

As of 2022, the Wikimedia Foundation is organizing its activities around the following eight regions:

It has been proposed that Wikimedians from eight regions of the world should be represented on a Movement Charter drafting committee.

  • ESEAP: East and Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region
  • SAARC: South Asia
  • MENA: Middle East and North Africa
  • Indaba: Africa, as per Wiki Indaba, an approximately annual conference
  • CEE and CA: Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia
  • Northern and Western Europe
  • Latin America and the Caribbean
  • North America (sometimes including the Caribbean); see WikiConference North America
