Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2013/Documentation/roundup gender lgbt

Roundup-Session 2 - gender diversity: LGBT (best practices & new ideas) edit

1. What project has worked well and why? edit

  1. wikimedia-lgbt on IRC
  • place where a lot of original lgbt-related things have been discussed in the first place
  • Helpful support place
  • some traffic at least once a week
  • Advertised to chapters, to be promoted to WikiProjects
  • somehow loosely related lists like women's list made contact, supportive

Local events - Lesbian Spring

  • high quality article about lesbians on UK wikipedia, translated it into French
  • Presentation of comics book & graphic novels
  • Picture and interview for Wikinews
  • French Wikinews worked well, but translating it into English was disastrous, said it was "too original", specific style of proof is needed
  • worked well, because French Wikinews is okay with interviews, got accepted
  • different Wikimedia wikis encourage different styles of contribution!
    • different perceptions, different cultural background are good, since it empowers different perspectives, but it can also be disencouraging and negative, depending
  • building on previous succesful work is helpful
  • sharing lesbian history on Wikipedia is precious, plans for doing this later

WikiProject LGBT on Spanish Wikipedia

  • including IRC-channel & user group
  • successful es.wiki group work, encouraging each other
  • creating articles on lgbt-related topics like gay marriage in various countries, transgender people
  • creating friendly environment was helpful, check categories and user-boxes to gain more "like-minded" editors
    • even attracted straight editors who had not been previously interested in LGBT issues, because atmosphere was so fun

English Wikipedia article on polyamory, someone wrote on article feedback tool comment "it helped a friend understand"

2. What new (and improved) ideas result from the conference? edit

Wiki Loves Pride

  • in developing stage; intended to be multi-project-covered, was the original plan

3. Who likes to be the contact person for people who want to get more involved or like to adapt the project in their home country?

  • Wiki loves Pride --> Gregory Varnum
  • Wiktionary --> Sumana
  • Wikidata --> NEED HELP Greg Varnum to start Wikidata task force (feel free to ask questions about wikidata) -make a task force https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Task_forces
  • Wikimania --> Katie Chan
  • LGBT conference --> Maria*

4. What future projects should be started and who likes to take part? edit

Wiki Loves Pride

  • in developing stage; intended to be multi-project-covered, was the original plan

Wiktionary

  • effort to check if slang and other LGBT-related words on Wiktionary have suitable definitions (raise awareness for inappropriate wording)
  • Project to check important terms

Wikidata

  • check if on Wikidata there are unfortunate assumptions within its structured data / format and doing something about it
    • especially around gender

Wikimania

  • someone should have the job to advise local organiser to make sure their events are trans friendly
    • registration
    • accommodation
    • t-shirt
    • etc.
  • Better advertising for LGBT meetup at Wikimania
    • some women even assume they can´t participate, thinking it's only for men, because men run it and promote it

LGBT conference

  • if diversity conference becomes annual thing, LGBT track and/or LGBT-specific event could be established
  • people could be frightened that they get "labeled", that attending there is some sort of outing
