This page is the 2019 Annual Report for Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia (MYS) for the period of 10 September 2018 – 9 September 2019. This annual report is the second report submitted by the user group after its official formation and formal recognition on 10 September 2017.

Background edit

In this second year of the user group establishment, we could see that there has been a growth in the number of editors with high enthusiasts that have helped the user group growth and activities. These editors are also located in various geographical region in Malaysia (e.g. Sabah, Penang, Kelantan), in which it really helped in terms of reaching out to the new geographical places in introducing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Foundation projects to the Malaysian society. At the same time, routine Wikipedia meetups are always being held from time to time and participation in global and regional Wikimedia-related conferences were being done continuously.

We realize that in order to maintain the existence of this user group, continuity and sustainability is the key factor. This user group can never continue long in the future if it is run as a 1 or 2-person show. We had to create a community and society in which everyone can always take turn to run this group. Introduction to students in schools and universities are continuously being held in the hope that we can create Wikipedia Student Club in each of those educational institution.

The main vision for the 2nd year of the user group establishment was to create the solid foundation of the Wikipedian community in the country in various states and cities.

Committees edit

Three active Wikipedia editors voluntarily formed the high committees to maintain the documentation works required for the user group. In day-to-day reality, everyone helped each other whenever who is available to run the user group with other editors who are not high committees. Starting from the 2018-2019 period, we shall include the other core committee members in the committee sections.

During some meetups, there were people who only became audience or passively participated in without having their hands on the computers.

  • Conference is a full-day event with detailed in-depth knowledge exchange and/or training in editing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Foundation offline projects
