On February 8, the "Wars and Battles on Wikipedia" contest in Georgian Wikipedia ended. The contest aimed to increase the number of articles about wars and battles in Georgian Wikipedia and the total number of articles. Eleven users participated in the contest, and 233 new articles were created.
- Women in Wikipedia
The contest, which was held in Georgian Wikipedia for a month, from February 12 to March 12, organized by Wikimedia UG Georgia, ended on March 12. 11 users participated in the contest, and a total of 231 new articles were created. The contest aimed to increase the number of articles about women on Georgian Wikipedia. Achieving and maintaining gender balance is a priority of Wikimedia UG Georgia.
- CEE Spring
The contest, which was held in Georgian Wikipedia from March 21 to May 31 and which was organized by Wikimedia Central and Eastern Europe (WMCEE) and locally coordinated by WMGE, had the purpose of creating articles about the countries of the Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asian region. CEE Spring aims to consolidate local forces of free knowledge collectors to collect and disseminate information on history, culture, traditions, and population across the region, thereby increasing the scope and quality of free knowledge about Central and Eastern Europe, regionally and globally. In total, seven editors created more than 300 articles during the contest.
The Wikimedia UG Georgia awarded five prizes to winners.
- Wikipedia Asian Month
From November 1 to 30, the annual contest "Wikipedia Asian Month" was held in Georgian Wikipedia. The contest aims to increase the number and quality of articles about Asian countries in Georgian Wikipedia. As a symbol of friendship between Wikipedia's Asian communities, users who create at least four articles according to the criteria will receive a themed design postcard from another participating country. Users who create the most articles will be awarded the title of "Wikipedia Asian Ambassador" and prizes established by the WMGE.
Wikimedia UG Georgia has been running this contest on Georgian Wikipedia since 2016. Six users participated in the contest this year, and 229 new articles were created. Three winning editors were identified, who will be given the prizes determined in accordance with the contest.
Enhancing quality of content
editImproving content in Wikimedia projects, especially in Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikisource, and Wikimedia Commons, is a strategic goal and challenge for Wikimedia UG Georgia. Improving the quality of content in projects such as Wikidata and Wikisource requires relevant knowledge. For this, WMGE provides resources, training, and support for new and existing editors to learn editing best practices and guidelines.
Based on the above, Wikimedia Georgia conducts various kinds of workshops and trainings for the WikiClub members of Wikimedia Georgia. During the workshops, participants learned:
- Wikipedia editing interface;
- Basics of editing an existing article (adding content, editing text, correcting errors);
- Understanding Wikipedia's guidelines and policies (notability, verifiability, etc.);
- How to add citations and references using Wikipedia's tools (with new UI);
- Using Wikipedia Tools and Resources (Wikipedia Library);
- Navigating in WikiProjects;
- Advanced Editing Techniques;
- Understanding and using templates and infoboxes.
We have achieved significant success with those workshops, including contributing to the platform's growth and improvement.
Media contest
editOne important goal of Wikimedia UG Georgia is increasing the number of freely licensed Georgia-related content on Wikimedia Commons. Such contests create and upload high-quality images that enhance the visual and informational appeal of Wikipedia articles. Different contributors provide diverse image types, which improves the richness and depth of content available on Wikipedia.
In 2023, Wikimedia Georgia held the "Wiki Loves Monuments" contest, which attracted 32 users and uploaded more than 1,800 new images of Georgian cultural heritage to Wikimedia Commons. New media files helped us to fill the gaps with relevant media on Wikimedia Projects.
Contests also motivated new and existing contributors to participate, which fostered a sense of community among participants who share a common goal and collaborate on projects. During the contests, users improved their photography and editing skills and their understanding of licensing and copyright. The contest also raised awareness about Wikipedia's content needs and the importance of freely licensed media. The contest provides a platform to recognize and reward contributors for their efforts, fostering a positive and supportive community environment.
High-quality media improves the overall user experience on Wikipedia, making articles more engaging and informative.
