This grant proposal covers several events to which members of Wikimedia Portugal have been invited to and workshops we are organizing in relation to a GLAM partnership currently underway with the National Library of Portugal. Participation in II Festa do Software Livre - Moita 2018 + BNP GLAM event edit

23-25 November 2018

WMPT is helping the organization and being part of the second edition of the Free Software Party - Moita 2018, which includes the first Ubuntu Congress in Portugal. The event will take two and half days, and we’re planning to also celebrate the 6th wikidata birthday there. We’ll have a stand, participate on the conferences / debates and probably have a place for workshops / training. It’ll also be an opportunity to set ties with other FOSS community members and associations. Since a number of Wikimedians involved in the National Library (BNP) GLAM will be in Lisbon, a GLAM event is also happening at BNP (see above). It includes a first day dedicated to Wikidata workshops and hackatons, and a second day of GLAM conferences and practical GLAM workshops.

    • Flight tickets Funchal-Lisboa-Funchal: 100€ (Paulo Perneta)
    • Train tickets Porto-Lisboa-Porto: 60 € (André Barbosa)
    • Train tickets Porto-Lisboa-Porto: 70 € (Waldir Pimenta)
    • Accommodation + food (2 nights) + transportation (inside Lisbon and Lisbon-Moita-Lisbon: 220 € (Paulo Perneta / André Barbosa / Waldir Pimenta)
    • ’’’Sub-total’’’: 450€

People involved
(e.g. How many people can benefit from the micro grant you request):

The activities will involve 5-7 members of Wikimedia Portugal organizing the events and giving the presentations/presenting the workshops. The BNP event will aim at building their capacity to edit Wikimedia projects, and is expected to reach their staff but is also aiming at attracting staff from other libraries, museums and cultural institutions in Portugal and inspire them to start their own GLAM projects. We expect that between 50-100 people will be reached.

The Moita event will allow the presentation of Wikimedia projects to an audience of Free and Open Software enthusiast and is expected to be attended by 100-200 people.

Please explain what influence your activity will have on Wikimedia Projects
(e.g. quantitative: number of new pictures uploaded to commons, no of new articles created / qualitative: strengthen the community of german-speaking wikipedia authors etc,):

The ongoing BNP GLAM project is expected to create thousands of new pictures uploaded to Commons, alongside associated metadata that will be created in Wikidata via conversion from Unimarc format. This last part is what we expect to be creating at the Wikidata workshops and hackaton. The capacity of the community would be considerably strengthened on Wikidata, Commons, licencing, copyright and GLAM. The partnerships we expect to be creating, securing and developing during those days have an huge potential for every Wikimedia project.

The Moita event will take two and half days, and we’re planning to also celebrate the 6th Wikidata birthday there. We’ll have a stand, participate in the conferences / debates, and we expect to have a place for workshops / training. It’ll also be an opportunity to set ties with other FOSS community members and associations in Portugal, which will strengthen the connection between the Wikimedia Movement and other FOSS movements in Portugal. We predict a positive impact on Wikidata too, from the activities and workshops we'll be doing during this event.

We can probably cover part of the costs of accommodation, but the entire amount would allow us to maintain some reserves for 2019 while our suspension is not lifted. We also expect to raise some money from our Flash Fundraiser that can be discounted from this grant request, if needed to lower the total amount.
