ID : 17 Spillover effect from growth at Wikisource
Author(s): Gleb Liavontsieŭ, Uladzimir Rusakovich Username(s): W Type of submission: lecture
Affiliation: Wikimedia Community User Group Belarus Theme(s): Community Engagement
Abstract:

Impetuous growth in content creation during the last 2 years at Belarusian Wikisource has risen the competence of local Wikimedians tremendously. The 5-fold jump in the number of pages corresponded with the same-fold growth in readership. It presented an opportunity to widen the scope of input to other language editions of Wikisource as well as other Wikimedia projects.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

A small team of devoted volunteers at the beginners' level in local Wikisource projest can grow their understanding of wikitools rapidly (in 2 years period). Such success brings their expertise to other Wikimedia projects beyond Wikipedia, such as Wikimedia Commons. Challenges of multilingual & multiscript cultural heritage add the possibilities of contributing to other language editions of Wikisource later on.
