Wikiclubs
editOn November 23, the 9th Wikiclub was opened in the Ijevan Branch of Yerevan State University. This is the first Wikiclub in periferies of a university.
As of November 30, there are 224 registered members in all 9 active Wikiclubs (Goris, Ddmashen, Lernapat, Kirants, Koghb, Hatsik, Jermuk, Kajaran, and Ijevan). Wikiclub members continued the wikification of materials from the “Agricultural Encyclopedia” (“Armenian Encyclopedia” Publishing House, 2015) which was released under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license. Wikiclub members either created the missing items of the corresponding pages in Wikidata or linked the created articles with already existing items. Within the frames of this project 25 articles with a volume of 66,700 bytes were created in October. Since the launch of the project 684 articles, 1,833,564 bytes have been contributed to Armenian Wikipedia. The project will continue in December, as well.
In November, the final stage of the “Western Europe Fall” three-stage project started, the purpose of which is to enrich Armenian Wikipedia with articles about those countries which are not covered by the annual CEE Spring contest. The term Western Europe in this project is strictly conditional because there are North and South European countries included, as well. Overall, articles about 25 countries are created and improved. During this competition project, the club members translate biographies and articles on different topics - geography, sports, cooking, culture, art, literature, etc - from other language Wikipedias into Armenian. The project has three stages and will last until the end of November. At each stage of the project, the club member who is the most active and creates quality articles receives a gift set by Wikimedia Armenia, and four other participants are given certificates. The Wikiclub member who showed the best result in the sum of all three stages was awarded by the Wikimedia Armenia special award.
Within the framework of the third stage of the project, 13 Wikiclub members created 122 articles with a volume of 1,852,176 bytes. Overall, throughout the whole project 357 articles were created with a volume of 4 821 621 bytes
Wikiedits
editThroughout November, out of 224 Wikiclub members 61 contributed to Wikipedia. In total, they have created 293 articles and made 1175 edits with a volume of 4,136,051 bytes.
During the month of November, 49 Wikiclub members contributed to Wikidata, by making 462 edits in total.
Other events
editBesides editing, the following events were organized in Wikiclubs:
- Koghb Wikiclub members dedicated this month to writing articles about a country. This time they selected North Korea. Wikiclub members presented interesting information about the country and then created several articles - Kim Il Sung Square, Balloon propaganda campaigns in Korea, Hamgyong Mountains, Mangyongdae։ As November is considered to be media literacy month, Koghb Wikiclub members did a “Media literacy and Wikipedia” presentation. They met with 6th graders of 2nd primary school of Koghb. The meeting was very informative and participants asked many questions.
- On November 24, an editathon on the topic "Cuisine of Nations" was launched at the Kirants Wikiclub, during which 4 articles were created: Jour (soup), Skordalia, Aliata, Diples.
Summary of Wiki Loves Monuments
editIn October Wikimedia Armenia participated in the annual “Wiki Loves Monuments” international photo contest. The purpose of the contest, as usual, is to take pictures of historical monuments and cultural heritage objects and upload them on Wikimedia Commons, as well as use them on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
This year, 57 people participated in the Armenian contest of Wiki Loves Monuments, out of which 20 were new registered participants. Overall, 6459 pictures of monuments from the list of immovable monuments and culture of Armenia were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
Until the end of November, the jury selected 10 local winner photos uploaded by 5 participants based on the quality, and submitted them to the international jury for the international contest.

Awards ceremony of the “Wiki.հայ” campaign
editFrom September 15 to October 15, Internet Society NGO and Wikimedia Armenia organized the annual “Wiki.հայ” edit-a-thon campaign.
This year “Wiki.հայ” was dedicated to the .am national domain and the 30th anniversary of Internet Society NGO which is also the initiator and sponsor of the campaign.
Internet Society NGO, which has devoted 30 years of its existence to the Internet and the development of the .am domain, has declared the enrichment of Armenian content related to that field as the theme of the jubilee year of "Wiki.հայ". Among the 12 awards in various categories, the .am-30 award was also included. Throughout a month 16 participants created 97 articles with a volume of 2,645,025 bytes.
On November 27, the awards ceremony of the “Wiki.հայ” annual campaign took place during which along with a short movie screening dedicated to Internet in Armenia, seven Wikipedia editors were awarded certificates and prizes for their active participation in the “Wiki.հայ” campaign.
Memoirs of Veterans
editWith the support of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, the Union of Veterans named after Marshal Baghramyan and Wikimedia Armenia launched a competition dedicated to the four anniversaries related to World War II:
- Siege of Leningrad (80th anniversary),
- Sassuntsi-Davit Tank Regiment (80th anniversary),
- Gevorg Vardanyan (100th anniversary),
- admiral Hovhannes Isakov (130th anniversary).
From October 15 to November 15, participants created and improved articles related to these topics. In case of equal quality and quantity of articles created and improved, the winner will be the person who covered the main topic the most. The awards ceremony will take place on 16 December.
Meeting in European University of Armenia
editOn November 22, staff of Wikimedia Armenia met with students from the European University of Armenia. The meeting lasted for an hour during which the students were introduced to Wikipedia and its sister projects. Wikimedia Armenia staff also answered student’s questions.
The purpose of the meeting was to encourage students to join the movement and use their skills and knowledge to create free and valuable content for the wider public on Wikimedia projects
Wikimedia Armenia’s events on media outlets
editThis month Wikimedia Armenia opened its 9th Wikiclub in Ijevan, Tavush region of Armenia. This is the third Wikiclub operating in the region. It is worth noting that the Wikiclub was opened in the Ijevan Branch of Yerevan State University, becoming the first Wikiclub which will be operating in a university instead of schools or youth centers. The opening of the Wikiclub was covered by the “Tavush media” news agency.
This year “Wiki.hy” edit-a-thon which was organized from September 15 to October 15, was dedicated to the .am domain and the 30th anniversary of “Internet Society” NGO, the initiator and sponsor of the edit-a-thon. On November 27, “Internet Society” NGO organized a ceremony, a part of which was dedicated to the “Wiki.hy” campaign and the awards ceremony of the edit-a-thon. This news was covered on the organization's Facebook page, as well as in the news section of their website. Armenpress news agency also covered the awards ceremony of “Wiki.hy” campaign.
Opening of Ijevan Wikiclub
editOn November 23, Wikimedia Armenia opening a Wikiclub in the Ijevan Branch of the Yerevan State University (YSU). This is the 9th Wikiclub in Armenia and 3rd in Tavush region of Armenia. The other two Wikiclubs of the region are located in Koghb which was founded in 2018 and in Kirants in 2019.
The university administration, faculty and students, as well as Wikimedia Armenia staff from Yerevan took part in the Wikiclub opening ceremony. The president of Wikimedia Armenia, Arshak Shahenyan, delivered opening remarks. He introduced the activities and projects of the organization, the role and purpose of the Wikiclubs for Wikimedia Armenia and the movement in the country.
An opening speech was also delivered by the acting director of the Ijevan Branch of YSU, Anushavan Makaryan. He stressed the significance of the collaboration between the Ijevan Branch and Wikimedia Armenia which not only allows for the introduction of modern approaches in the field of education, enriching the creation and dissemination of quality content on Wikimedia platforms, but also provides students with the opportunity to do their internships and acquire practical skills in parallel with theoretical knowledge.
Wikimedia Armenia employees also spoke, noting that in Wikiclubs, teenagers and young people learn the basics of editing and creating articles on Wikipedia.
Ijevan Wikiclub will operate in the premises of the Inovative Hub. This is a unique Wikiclub for Armenia because it is the first one that is founded in a university.
Visits to Wikiclubs
editOn November 23, after the opening of Ijevan Wikiclub, four employees of Wikimedia Armenia visited the other two Wikiclubs operating in Tavush region.
The first stop was Kirants village. The Wikiclub which was founded in 2019 works in the village hall. The second stop was Koghb Wikiclub which operates in the 2nd primary school of the village.
The Wikimedia Armenia staff got acquainted with Wikiclub members, the coordinators presented the working conditions and current problems of their Wikiclubs. The guests had a conversation with Wikiclub members, answered their questions and presented the organization's upcoming projects.
Afterwards, the guests along with coordinators and Wikiclub members visited the historical-cultural sites of Kirants and Koghb villages.
