Wiki Loves Monuments 2024

In October 2024, Wikimedia Armenia joined the “Wiki Loves Monuments” international photo contest the purpose of which is to take photos of historical monuments and cultural heritage objects and upload them on Wikimedia Commons afterwards using them on Wikipedia free encyclopedia and other projects of Wikimedia Foundation.

This October 57 Armenian Wikimedians joined the WLM contest, out of which 20 were newly registered participants. Overall, 6459 photos from the list of immovable monuments of history and culture of Armenia were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

In October, Wikimedia Armenia organized three photo walks in order to engage newcomers in the photo contest. 31 photographers took part in the photo walks visiting 13 historical-cultural sites. Every year, Wikimedia Armenia organizes special workshops for newcomer participants who are not familiar with the steps of uploading pictures to Wikimedia Commons. This year 7 newcomers participated in the workshop organized at the WMAM office learning about uploading photos and filling in the information correctly.

As of October 31, there are 213 registered members in all 8 active Wikiclubs (Goris, Ddmashen, Lernapat, Kirants, Koghb, Hatsik, Jermuk, and Kajaran). Wikiclub members continued the wikification of materials from the “Agricultural Encyclopedia” (“Armenian Encyclopedia” Publishing House, 2015) which was released under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license. Wikiclub members either created the missing items of the corresponding pages in Wikidata or linked the created articles with already existing items. Within the frames of this project 28 articles with a volume of 97,619 bytes were created in October. Since the launch of the project 659 articles, 1,766,864 bytes have been contributed to Armenian Wikipedia. The project will continue in November, as well.

In October, the “Western Europe Fall” three-stage project continued, the purpose of which is to enrich Armenian Wikipedia with articles about those countries which are not covered by the annual CEE Spring contest. The term Western Europe in this project is strictly conditional because there are North and South European countries included, as well. Overall, articles about 25 countries are created and improved. During this competition project, the club members translate biographies and articles on different topics - geography, sports, cooking, culture, art, literature, etc - from other language Wikipedias into Armenian. The project has three stages and will last until the end of November. At each stage of the project, the club member who is the most active and creates quality articles receives a gift set by Wikimedia Armenia, and four more participants are given certificates. The Wikiclub that shows the best result in the sum of all three stages will be awarded by the Wikimedia Armenia special award.

Within the framework of the project, 13 Wikiclub members created 126 articles with a volume of 1,758,054 bytes.

Throughout October, out of 213 Wikiclub members 57 contributed to Wikipedia. In total, they have created 222 articles and made 863 edits with a volume of 3,421,076 bytes. During the month of October, 41 Wikiclub members contributed to Wikidata, by making 274 edits in total.

Other events

Besides editing, the following events were organized in Wikiclubs:

  • Koghb Wikiclub started a collaboration with “Koghb” Foundation which provided information about Kostan Zaryan. Based on this information the article about the writer was improved on Armenian Wikipedia.

As per the annual plan of the Wikiclub, each month Wikiclub members break into groups and present information about a certain country, afterwards translating articles about it. In October, the selected country was Madagaskar and the articles created were Ambilobe and Nosy Be.

  • In Hatsik Wikiclub, discussions on rules of conduct were held, the editors not only learned some rules of conduct, but also created a poster entitled "Rules of Etiquette" at the end of the month.
  • Kirants Wikiclub members improved the article about villages Saint Trinity Church. On October 27, they visited the church, took pictures and uploaded on Wikimedia Commons afterwards using them in the above-mentioned article.

30th anniversary of the “Internet Society” NGO

In the middle of October Wikipedia editors finished the “WikiHay” campaign that started between Wikimedia Armenia and Internet Society NGOs on September 15. The purpose of the campaign was to enrich the Internet with Armenian content, to create Armenian articles on various topics. This year the campaign was dedicated to the Armenian .am domain and the 30th anniversary of the Internet Society NGO which was financing the project. Considering the last point, the organization also prepared a special award. Therefore, along with the 12 awards for various nominations, there will also be a special “.am-30” award. Internet Society NGO, which has devoted 30 years of its existence to the Internet and the development of the .am domain, has declared the enrichment of Armenian content related to that field as the theme of the jubilee year of "WikiHay". Within a month, 16 participants created 97 articles with a volume of 2,645,025 bytes.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2024: photo walks

In October 2024, Wikimedia Armenia organized three photo walks within the framework of Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest.

On October 19, the first photo was organized and the destination was Aparan. 16 participants visited Eghipatrush Church, a 5th century church in the same village, Saint Poghos-Petros Church located on the bank of Aparan reservoir, Tukh Manuk Church and Astvatsankal Monastery.

The second photo walk was held on October 26 towards the Vayots Dzor region - Tsaghats Kar Monastery, Smbataberd Fortress and 13th-14th century Gladzor University. 15 participants took part in this photo walk and they had to walk around 7 km up the mountain to reach the Tsaghats Kar Monastery and Smbataberd Fortress. The last direction was Vagharshapat in Armavir region of Armenia, where the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, the mother church, was reopened after 12 years of renovation. Other destinations were Saint Gayane, Saint Katoghike, Saint Hripsime, Saint Mariam Astvatsatsin, Saint Harutyun and Shoghakat churches.

As a result of all 3 photo walks, 3500 photos were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons within the framework of the photo contest.

Memoirs of Veterans

With the support of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, the Union of Veterans named after Marshal Baghramyan and Wikimedia Armenia have initiated the "Memoirs of Veterans" contest. It was dedicated to four significant anniversaries related to the World War II - 80th anniversary of the Siege of Leningrad, 80th anniversary of the Sassuntsi-Davit Tank Regiment, 100th anniversary of the intelligence officer Gevorg Vardanyan and 130th anniversary of admiral Hovhannes Isakov.

The contest started on October 15 and will last until November 15. Participants of the contest create and improve articles from the list suggested by the organizers. As it is a contest, in case of equal quality and quantity of articles created and improved, the winner will be the person who covered the main topic the most. The first three places in each of the four thematic directions - 12 people - will receive monetary awards of equal value. Throughout the 15 days of the contest, 163 articles were created and improved.

Youth Summer WikiCamp 2024 winner’s award: wikiexcursion

As usual, Wikimedia Armenia awards the winning group of the Youth Wikicamps with a wikiexcursion. This year the group with the best newcomer and the best Wikipedian were awarded with a excursion to the Byurakan Observatory after Viktor Hambardzumyan, Amberd Fortress, Vahramashen Church and Kari Lake. The destination was chosen by the group; 12 participants took photos of the historical and natural monuments, as well as had fun, sang songs, played the guitar, and received new information about the places they visited.
