Wikipedia's 20th birthday

On 15 June 2021, Armenian wiki community celebrated the 20th anniversary of Wikipedia. Because of COVID-19 pandemic this annual event was celebrated online this year.

A month before the birthday, Wikimedia Armenia had organised an edit-a-thon on creation of gift-articles. The idea was to create 20 articles as a gift to Wikipedia’s 20th anniversary. Within the frameworks of the edit-a-thon each participant aimed at creating 20 articles (each article up to 10.000 bytes) in a month.

Overall, 64 participants created 671 articles; 23 out of 64 participants created 20 and more articles.

In Armenian Wiki community the Wikipedia birthday has traditionally been a day to summarize different Wiki programs, to honor the remarkable community members, and to give prizes.

The journey of 20 long years of Wikipedia was presented and summarised with an interesting presentation. After telling the story of Wikipedia, we presented the most remarkable Wiki projects of the previous year, the winners of those projects, competitions and edit-a-thons.

Editors stood out for their contributions (amount of articles, bytes of contributions), activity shown in community and those with the best results were also presented during the event.

Wikiclubs' report

In January the Wikiclubs kept working with the same enthusiasm. Clubs worked both online and offline. During the month, the participants worked on Wikipedia, Wikisource and other wiki projects. Various events were held inside the clubs.

On 28 January 2021, a meeting dedicated to famous Armenian actor Vahram Papazian’s life and career was organised in the frames of the event called “Meeting the Art” by Karvachar Wikiclub. The topic was presented by one of the editors of the Wikiclub.

On 15 January, the 20th anniversary of Wikipedia was celebrated in Lernapat Wikiclub. The results of the previous year were summarized, the names of the Wikiclub editors with the best results in 2020 were announced, “An article per week” project for the Wikiclub was summarised. In 2020 during this project almost 10 participants created an article per week.

During the month the members of Goris Wikiclub had a video call with the students in their senior year of 189 school in Yerevan. The students learned about the Wiki projects.

Many club members participated in the “20 articles on Wikipedia’s 20th birthday” project and created a lot of articles.

In January, wikiclubs have contributed 78,200 bytes to Wikisource․ With 6,133 edits on Wikipedia 790 articles were created, in general 9,607,845 bytes.

In January 14 newcomers joined the Wikiclubs.
