Wikipedia Day

edit

It has already become a tradition to celebrate Wikipedia's birthday at the Wikimedia Armenia office.

On January 15, over 80 participants gathered together under one roof to share the excitement and joy of the Wikimedia Movement and Wikipedia.

Wikimedia Armenia President Susanna Mkrtchyan welcomed all the guests. Staff member Mher Bekaryan presented the achievements of both Armenian Wikipedia and Wikimedia Armenia in 2018. Mher emphasized the role of volunteers and the impact of Wikimedia Armenia events in the development of Wikimedia projects in Armenia. He followed this with summarizing the results of the contests and joint projects of 2018. Several nominations were made for “I create a vital article campaign”, “The Republic of Armenia - 1918”, “Animation Film Editathon”, “Armenian-Norwegian women editathon”, “Armenian-Spanish collaboration”, CEE Spring 2018

Winners of all competitions received books and the winners of the Armenian-Spanish cooperation were given an opportunity to visit Spain to get acquainted with the country's culture and everyday life.

The presentation was finalized with the announcement of the Armenian Wikipedian of the year by Wikimedia Armenia. Throughout the year Wikimedia Armenia follows the activities of Armenian Wikipedians and awards an editor with the most contribution for the development of the Armenian Wikipedia. Wikimedia Armenia has nominated User:Ավետիսյան91 for active participation in discussions, proactivity, volunteering in the establishment of a Wikiclub in Rind village, and updating articles on ongoing events in Armenia.

For those who could not attend the event, WMAM had organized a live streaming of the event on social media.

After the award ceremony, the evening was completed with the cutting of the traditional Wikipedia cake. The Wikipedians had a great time socializing and sharing the joy of the day.

Youth WikiCamp

edit

On January 26 - February 3, Wikimedia Armenia organized the Winter Wikicamp 2019. The WikiCamp hosted participants aged 20-35 and focused on editing the vital articles. The medical students and doctors worked on the most important medical articles.

The camp enabled us to bring together the participants of two campaigns - “I create a vital article campaign” and “I create a vital medial article” - allowing them to share practices and knowledge. For this camp, the number of applicants was high in comparison to the previous camps. We have received 278 applications for the 60 available places. The selection process was conducted with two approaches, those contributed on the Wikipedia previously, were selected on the base of their contributions, while the new registrants were selected predominantly for their educational background and motivation letter. Overall 34 editors with different levels of contributions and 26 new participants were offered WikiCamp scholarships. The Wikiteam consisted of 14 members, supported participants in everything connected to Wikipedia, as well as organized other activities.

As stated above, the campers worked on the most important articles of Wikipedia. In order to organize the editing of articles smoothly, the selection of main articles was made in the application form. This was beneficial in many aspects because we could avoid article selection and editing conflicts and could have more comprehensive evaluation data in the end. On the basis of learnings from the previous camps, editors with various experience level were divided into 6 groups, each having two wiki mentors. This structure eased the learning and editing process and impacted on mutual assistance bringing more responsibility to the group. The mentors had regular meetings, where the activity and difficulties of participants were discussed. At the first meeting, the mentors approved the model of teaching, with the general highlight to begin teaching with Visual Editor, a practice we had developed from the last camps.

At the camp, medical specialists decided to form a medical council which will be responsible for the quality and revision of medical articles. The council will be also working on the lists of medical articles and develop the strategy of improving medical content on Armenian Wikipedia. The Winter Wikicamp was also notable for its quality and number of improved articles, about 140 articles were completely improved for 7 days.

Using the opportunity of having many experienced editors and motivated newcomers, we have conducted a brainstorming session on the Wikimedia Armenia's new annual plan. All participants were divided into groups and developed series of recommendations, suggestions to be considered for the new plan development. This was a great exercise for us in both exploring new ideas and bringing more community members into organizational thinking.

Discussion with Western Armenian wikicommunity of Aleppo

edit

Within the regular support provided to the wikicommunites, a Skype meeting was initiated by the Western Armenian program team with the wikicommunity in Aleppo to further expand the scope of their activities.

During the meeting, a group of active editors and the program team talked about improving the quantity and quality of Western Armenian Wikipedia articles, as well as discussed on ways of improving editing skills and received relevant tips and tricks. It was also decided to launch editing workshops to take place twice every month. The program team will continue providing full support to empower the wikicommunity of Aleppo to organize the workshops.

Moreover, during the meeting a work plan was drafted to engage the wikicommunity in collecting and digitizing books from Armenian libraries in Aleppo. Over the past month, a few books are already digitized and stored in Wikisource and in the future will be used as sources for edit-a-thons, as well.
