Teachers’ Wikiseminar in Tsakhkadzor edit

On June 25-30, 2018, Wikimedia Armenia organized the seventh Wikiseminar for teachers from different regions of Armenia within the frames of the Wikipedia Education program. Unlike the previous seminars, the teachers from Yerevan were also able to participate in the training. This change was made based on Wikimedia Armenia’s annual plan with the aim to expand the Education program in more Yerevan schools. WMAM received 120 applications out of which 43 participants were selected to attend the training. Similar to the previous training, the active editor-teachers expressed willingness to assist and mentor the newbies in making their first steps on Wikipedia. To make the learning easier and more comprehensive the participants were divided into seven groups. Each group had its experienced mentor who assisted the teachers throughout the editing process. As a result, the participants created 203 articles.

At the seminar the participants also participated in different discussions on how to use Wikipedia in the school curriculum, the ways of involving their students in the Wikipedia Education program. A list of tactics was composed based on the discussions which would be sent to teachers as a reminder of the discussions and encouragement to come of with wiki initiatives in their schools. The experienced wiki teachers hold a small presentation about their WikiClubs which they are running in their schools. Besides wiki related activities, the teachers had an opportunity to visit Orbeli brothers museum in Tsaghkadzor where they learned about Orbeli brothers life and activities.

The third WikiWeek was held from 25th till 30th of June, in Tsaghkadzor, Armenia. Training was organized for 18 participants from different countries and professional backgrounds including teachers, journalists, school principals and others interested in the field of Wikipedia. A useful meeting was with academician, pedagogue and writer Hakob Cholakyan who introduced them the methods of teaching students to differentiate the encyclopedic style from non-encyclopedic, how to choose reliable sources, etc.

Western Armenians also participated in discussions on how to use Wikimedia projects in education and gave lots of interesting ideas.

In the end of the training the editors stated that Wikipedia is the best way of preserving Western Armenian, they told that when they return to their countries they will collaborate with us.
