Working with American University of Armenia (AUA)

edit

Wikimedia Armenia constantly meets with university lecturers and presents the idea of using Wikimedia in education. One of those attempts was with the AUA Armenian language professor Anahit Hovhannisyan from the American University of Armenia who assigned students to translate one of the listed 10,000 vital articles from English into Armenian. Those translated articles are: Matsuo Bashō, Ray Bradbury, Maya Angelou, Ernest Hemingway, Isaac Asimov. Students learnt editing online and also visited Wikimedia Armenia office while having questions or needing assistance.

I create a medical article

edit

Quality content development is a priority direction for Wikimedia Armenia. Highlighting the role of Wikipedia articles related to medicine and supporting the improvement of these articles, we, in cooperation with Yerevan State Medical University, launched an initiative to make 1000 important medical articles available also for the Armenian community.

For this purpose “I create a vital medical article” event was organized on May 31-June 3, 2018 in Tsaghkadzor involving different doctors and medical students. Participants learnt how to edit Wikipedia and improve different medical articles.

The articles were mostly translated from the corresponding English versions which were chosen from the quality articles of the English Wikipedia.

57 applications were received from which 37 participants were selected. During the event 25 articles were created and 8 improved (841 edits, 1579883 bytes) related to different medical topics.

According to agreement with the University, WMAM will continue cooperation aimed at enlargement of medical content in Armenian Wikipedia and university lecturers will assign the students to create articles on various topics related to medicine.

Meeting of new WikiClubs coordinators

edit

In the scope of the grant received from AGBU “Bridge for CSOs” program, Wikimedia Armenia established five new WikiClubs in Alaverdi, Goris, Koghb, Spitak and Vardenik in June, 2018. The new WikiClubs will further assist our mission to support the creation of open knowledge and education in the regions of Armenia.

On June 15-16, 2018 Wikimedia Armenia organized a training-meeting for the coordinators of newly opened WikiClubs. At the meeting several points, methods and organizational aspects of WikiClubs work were discussed with the coordinators. The staff members of WMAM shared the main approaches of running education programs in the Wikimedia projects. This training session was built on the approaches tested and lessons learnt from our operating Wikiclubs, which, hopefully, would enable us to avoid the difficulties we had before.

The coordinators introduced their visions of WikiClubs and plans on the activity level. They had a discussion on the local and general challenges they may face when running a WikiClub in their communities.

Edit-a-thon in the frameworks of “Wiki Loves Yerevan” project

edit

On June 16, Wikimedia Armenia organized an edit-a-thon - another event in the framework of “Wiki Loves Yerevan” project. The one day edit-a-thon was organized to create and improve articles on Yerevan.

During the edit-a-thon, skillful editors from Yerevan and also WMAM WikiClubs edited and translated articles about history of Yerevan, streets, architecture, museums, as well as renowned citizens of Yerevan.

Within “Wiki Loves Yerevan” GLAM project Wikimedia Armenia received several printed materials which were digitized and used for creating new content in the Armenian Wikimedia projects.

Meeting with the Mekhitharist Congregation in Vienna

edit

After the EDs meeting in Vienna, WMAM Executive Director used the opportunity of being in Vienna, visited the Mekhitharist Congregation and had a meeting with P.Mag. Vahan Hovagimian. As the Congregation has a rich library both in Armenian and foreign languages, museum with various artifacts representing Armenian culture and folk life, WMAM ED discussed with P. Vahan the possibilty of cooperation between the Wikimedia Armenia, Wikimedia Austria and Congregation, thus also continuing the conversation started in early June, 2018 by the Armenian Wikipedia Editor Gardmanahay. P. Vahan was very enthusiastic about this possibility and would provide all the necessary resources to make this three party cooperation work. In the end of July representatives of Wikimedia Austria will visit the Congregation, to see the Library and the Museum, after which we will start planning the cooperation.
