Wikimania Indic Hackathon 2022
Wikimania Indic Hackathon 2022 is a national in-person hackathon with Wikimedia technical contributors from various technical groups and communities. The goal of our hackathon is to gather and cross-collaborate with the various developers working on Indic Wikimedia projects during Wikimania 2022- to create, celebrate and connect. We aim to deliberate and develop tools and work together on technical areas, existing projects and on MediaWiki. This will give the technical community an opportunity to further our collaboration with the wider community through the Wikimania festival. The meet-up will be hosted in Bangalore during Wikimania in August 2022.

We are planning to organize a three-day national level Wikimania Indic Hackathon in Bangalore during the main Wikimania event. This meet-up is composed of two tracks running parallelly for the whole meet-up. One track is dedicated to hackathons while the other track is for attending and engaging with online Wikimania events.

The hackathon is a participant-led track and participants will choose and work on the project of their interest from the set of pre-listed tasks. A brief list of activities that will be planned for the hackathon track:

  • Introduction to Wikimedia movement in India
  • Bug fixes
  • Making improvements to existing tools
  • Community discussions

We will join in the Wikimania festival celebrations during the 3-day event and the participants would be encouraged to join the different discussions to learn, contribute and share their experiences during Wikimania 2022. We also encourage newcomers to join the event and learn about the Wikimania, and the Wikimedia moment and help them in making connections with our fellow developers from across the globe.

We are planning to retain the ‘Festival Theme’ of Wikimania. So, the following components will be included in both the tracks:

  • Ice-break questions or social activity for entertainment and better interaction among the participants.
  • Spotlight Talks to showcase the achievements/contributions of participants.
  • Optional: A group photo in traditional wear of their native place (India has a huge diversity).

If you are planning to distribute funds to community members, such as by running a local scholarship program, please provide additional detail on how you will organize this process.
Please provide a summary explaining the following:

  • how you will invite community members to apply for funding,
  • the criteria you will use to determine eligibility, and
  • the processes or services you will use to distribute funds.

This description does not need to be comprehensive, but should generally explain the process for how community members will receive funds or support to participate in Wikimania. If you are not distributing funds to community members, please write N/A below.

  • We will be releasing the scholarship forms to all Indic Wikimedia technical communities three to four weeks before the meet-up begins. The applications will be reviewed and scored independently by three-four panel members from the organizing team based on the following factors: experience with Open Source projects, contributions, community involvement etc.

  • Previously, We had conducted a hackathon in Hyderabad in May 2022. This hackathon will be our second event for the year. The first hackathon was a great beginning for in-person events and most of its goals have been achieved. With this drive, we would like to conduct our second community event during the Wikimania at Bangalore and involve participants in community development discussions and expand the technical developer's community.
  • The outcomes of the event are as follows:
  • To develop the connection and collaboration among the Indic Wikimedia technical contributors and the community.
  • Encourage participants to know about the Wikimedia movement in India, ongoing projects, Mediawiki and other technical aspects of the Wikimedia ecosystem.
  • Identify technical areas for development and new tool requests from the communities and work on them.
  • Invite participants to collaborate with the core committee and engage in organizing the future Wikimedia technical events.
