East Africa Wiki communities scholarship application to attend Wikimania 2021
There have been several discussions on strengthening the cooperation and collaboration among its member communities from the East Africa Region and the neighboring countries. Following the call for Wikimania scholarship for WMF affiliates, and following the permission/call for one affiliate to apply on behalf of other communities/individuals that aren’t eligible for the Wikimania scholarship for the year 2021, East Africa Wiki communities held several discussions on how they can participate in one of the historical virtual Wikimania ever. The decision was made among the East Africa Wiki communities that Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania apply on behalf of the other communities, then the fund will be distributed to the individual communities based on the budget they submitted. Going in line with Wikimania 2021's theme which is 20 years of Wikipedia, this scholarship application seeks inclusion of the communities that might be left behind, hence to participate in this important global conference. Also the application is done for the purpose of increasing participation in global recommendations, topics, initiatives and conversations that affects large number of Wikimedians, that will help to create good environments for the ‘‘By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us’’ statement to come true.

editWhat Wikimedia movement affiliate do you represent?
- Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania and some other Wikimedia communities from the East Africa Region and neighboring countries who are not eligible for Wikimania 2021 scholarship funding but still would like to participate in Wikimania global conference in August 2021.
What needs are you requesting funding for to support your community’s participation at Wikimania?
- The needs vary, each community has its budget and the needs for the particular activities that are associated with attending Wikimania 2021. Please find the budgets below per each community with their respective needs.
Please provide a summary explaining the following:
- how you will invite community members to apply for funding,
- Discussions and communications via email and other channels (WhatsApp, Facebook and Telegram) was done to all community representatives and some members about Wikimedia Tanzania applying on behalf of those communities, as a response to that they send their budgets that are included in this scholarship application.
- the criteria you will use to determine eligibility, and
- The criteria used was looking for the countries that has at least a community of Wikipedia/Wikimedia projects contributors who would like to attend Wikimania 2021 virtually.
- the processes or services you will use to distribute funds.
- After we receive the funds in Tanzania, we will contact the community's representatives and ask the best way we can send them their requested funds. There are several ways we can use to distribute the funds and it includes using mobile money transfers (eg. MPESA, TIGOPESA, AIRTEL MONEY), through Bank transfers or other means of sending money such as Western Union. The method will vary depending on the convenient way each community will suggest to be used.

Impact of the Project
edit- Facilitate the East Africa Wikimedians from communities that are not affiliates to attend Wikimania.
- Coordinate a debriefing for EA participants on what to expect during wikimania and how to engage best with the program to enhance participation considering these communities will be joining for the first time.
- Good inclusion of people hence it will help Wikimania to be fruitful due to the richness of many contributions from people coming from different backgrounds.
- It will create a rare opportunity to have so many people representing different geographica regions
- Will enable a good future for all communities to collaborate in different projects through networking during Wikimania.
- It will be a good way of celebrating 20 years of Wikipedia by having good diversity of Wikimedians
