Wikipedia still has a fancruft problem. Let's face it; do pages like List of The Loud House (franchise) characters really help to build an encyclopedia? There are several other wikis (TVTropes, AllTheTropes, Fanlore, KnowYourMeme), but a lot of these are under incompatible licenses (such as CC-BY-NC), or focused mainly on bulleted lists instead of prose content. We need a place where fancruft can thrive and prosper. There are a lot of really cool fan wikis like MarioWiki, HRwiki, and TFwiki; imagine something like these, but for all of pop culture.

This is a proposal for a new Wikimedia sister project.

I would use kultura.wikimedia.org, if only to reduce overhead costs, since this is supposed to just be a place to dump fancruft from the main projects anyways.

edit

I don't use mailing lists.

TVTropes (and forks such as AllTheTropes) is similar but focuses on bulleted lists, not prose. There was a failed experiment on Miraheze called "Qualitipedia" that collapsed due to internal drama.

  •   Oppose Scope is way too broad, and Wikimedia, the FREE (as in free-use) knowledge and educational matter repository, is ill-suited to cataloging copyrighted media. Notable tropes already are covered by Wikimedia in prose format anyway. I’d say FANDOM exists, but FANDOM sucks. It’s an ad-saturated design nightmare with oppressive censorship policies and tons of extraneous garbage like churnalism pieces and auto-playing popup videos. The best way to combat its suckitude is to make good independent wikis in the style of WM (i.e. no ads or minimal unobtrusive ads, spotlessly clean design, w:wp:NOTCENSORED where needed, no publicity freeloading and unnecessary one-sided “help” from the host service) like the ones mentioned in the introduction. •   Oppose This reads as "This stuff is dumb/I don't like it, ergo, it should be deleted." If it's reliably sourced, it's reliably sourced.--Gen. Quon (talk) 15:41, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Oppose This doesn't sound like a good idea, at all. It has no realistic chance of becoming a real project. If no supporters besides OP make themselves known in the coming weeks, I'm going to reject this, simply because there's dozens of similar non-starter project proposals littering this page.
