Wikidata/Infoboxes
This page collects use-cases for Wikidata that should be taken into consideration for development. We're looking for a diverse set of examples of what kind of data is entered in infoboxes. Please only add infoboxes that actually exist already.
"We will probably not be able to support all of these. This is only a collection of things that would be nice to support."
- countries (population, government, GDP, area, Gini, HDI, ...) en:Germany, is:Finnland
- people (date+place of birth, date+place of death, other names, occupation, known for, influences, influenced...; to be taken into account: there are many many subtemplates) en:Richard Stallman, is:Christina Aguilera
I collected interwikis of infoboxes: /Infobox categories. Enjoy! :-) Bináris tell me 17:53, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Artworks
editCommons:Template:Artwork is currently used for ca 100k artworks. It is probably more interesting for testing than en:Template:Infobox Painting.
Among possibly tricky requirements:
- handling somewhat complex properties like 'author: anonymous engraving after a painting formerly attributed to the Workshop of Leonardo da Vinci'
- internationalization. Strings like "medium: blue tempera and faded watercolor on green canvas" are currently well translated using templates (in this case Commons:Template:technique) Is such a thing achievable with Wikidata ? Should we be content with "medium: tempera (blue); watercolor (faded); support: canvas (green) ?
People
editThe article en:Nevil Maskelyne is a case where the birth date might be stated in the Julian calendar and the death date in the Gregorian calendar. Arithmetic to calculate length of life would be complicated. The article en:Joseph Banks adds the complication that in the year of birth in England the year was considered to begin on 1 March, so it is not immediately obvious whether the birth year in the article is stated with the contemporary or modern beginning-of-year convention.
Countries
editThe straightforward case for countries is how they are today but there is also the case for how they have been in the past. Take Germany. At various stages in history we have had the Holy Roman Empire, the Weimar republic, the Third Reich, BRD and DDR, all with different borders and capitals, which changed over the life of the entity but all could be considered (if you squint a bit) Germany. I have no idea how you might deal with this but I suspect that it will need to be baked into the data structure - have the facility for each factoid to have a start date and an end date (as well as a reference).
Disputed
editSome facts are disputed. One option is to leave such details out of Wikidata and leave it to the wikipedia articles to describe the dispute. For those cases it would probably be good to have a <disputed> tag rather than leaving it blank, if only to stop people trying to fix the gap. With a load more work it might be possible to present the alternative versions but I'm not sure that work would be productive - these are disputes so the chances (in some cases) of agreeing how we give due weight to alternative versions seems slim. Movies and Municipalities
editSome suggestions:
- Movies including original title, release date and all the people. See de:Vorlage:Infobox Film (en:Template:Infobox film).
- Municipalities or other administrative divisions including their coordinates, current population (and if possible previous populations). See de:Vorlage:Infobox Gemeinde in Deutschland (en:Template:Infobox German location).
Elections
editSee en:Template:Infobox election, used ~5000 times on ENWP, with a wide variety of types of information. Would be useful to have the data centrally stored so that not every Wikipedia has to be updated manually. Also would be great for people wanting to reuse the data. --Yair rand (talk) 08:59, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Biological Taxa
editThe en:Template:Taxobox template would be an 'interesting' use case. It is complex. Many of the fields would be look ups of other items. Items could be represented as a subclassing hierarchy. A tool could be written with aids to help produce 'correctly' linking values. I'd be interested in being involved. RogerHyam (talk) 11:21, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
