Welcome to Wiki Loves Lagos project page, a (GLAM) project designed in partnership with the Lagos State Goverment, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and Iga Limited to preserve, conserve and promote the cultural heritage sites of Lagos State, showcase their uniqueness and change the perception and break down barriers to their accessibility as tourist sites of attraction.

Background

Badagry (February 1851, VIII, p.12)

In 2020, the Lagos State Government commenced a series of strategies to cushion the economic effects of COVID-19 - one of which is the current mandate of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture to develop new sites in Lagos that would help reduce the rate at which Nigerians travel abroad for adventure and leisure purposes.

In furtherance of this drive, the State Government authorized the coordination of the stakeholders relevant to the upward review of the existing Listed Sites (Preservation) Law of 2011 as a navigational guide on how to efficiently develop domestic tourism based on the current state of the tangible and intangible cultural assets.

Releasing, Digital documentation, and publishing of the cultural heritage assets (both tangible and intangible) of Lagos based on existing under a Creative Commons License on Wikimedia Commons for use on relevant Wikipedia were identified as a strategic approach to achieving the primary objectives of the Wiki Loves Lagos project. These cultural assets which can be found through expressions such as dance, food, folklore, and music will be catalogued for public education, information, and enlightenment.

To bridge contents gap on Wikimedia projects
Essentially, the lack of audiovisual in some Lagos State-related articles is a huge content gap as readers would like to have a sense of the rich cultural heritage of the state when reading related articles or on Wikipedia. One of the ways to bridge this content gap is to ensure the use of either photos or videos (or both) on relevant articles.

Highlighting the history of Lagos through its monuments, culture, art, people, and language from ancient to modern all backed up with the different parts, pieces, and places which became Lagos.
