Help illustrate Wikipedia: Participate to Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2021!
The WPWP campaign
Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) is an annual campaign where Wikipedia editors across world, Wikipedia language projects and communities add photos to Wikipedia articles lacking photos. This is to promote the use of digital media files collected from various Wikimedia photography contests, photowalks organized by the Wikimedia community, on Wikipedia article pages. Photos help to grasp the reader's attention better than a wall of text, illustrate content, and make the article more instructive and engaging for readers.
Thousands of images have been donated and contributed to Wikimedia Commons via various advocacy programs, photowalks, and contests including international photography contests such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc. Yet relatively few of these photos have been used on Wikipedia articles. Today, the Wikimedia Commons hosts millions of photo images but only a tiny portion of these have been used on Wikipedia article pages. This is a huge gap that this project aims at bridging.
Before participating, it is important to read the participation instructions and rules below in their entirety. Failure to do so may result in disqualification. All detailed participation rules may be found here: Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2021
Wiki Loves Africa prize categories
Every year, thousands of images are uploaded to Wikimedia Commons database as part of the Wiki Loves Africa photo contest.
But not every picture makes it into Wikipedia... and to be fair, not all images should make it there. Only the best, only the most useful, the most intriguing. A picture should only be added when it improves an article. Sometimes, a user will use an image to illustrate an article in a language... let's say English... but perhaps... it makes sense to also use that same image in the equivalent article in a different language!
So this year, we invite you to take some time to use Wiki Loves Africa images to illustrate Wikipedia articles. And we even offer some prizes for the most involved.
- 1st prize – US $100 gift card
- 1st to 3rd prizes – WLA souvenirs (if the post office is more efficient than it has been in the recent 18 months...)
All WLA years are eligible (all pictures available here)... BUT the first prize will consider edits made to any language except English and French.
To be eligible:
- you must add #WLA as a hashtag to your edit (as well as #WPWP)
- you must have registered your account before January 2021
- you must have made at least 300 mainspace edits to any language Wikipedia before 1st June 2021.
PLEASE PUT #WPWP AND #WLA in your edit summary!

The full list of all images uploaded as part of Wiki Loves Africa in the past may be found at :Wiki Loves Africa All Images
Below you will find suggestion of additions of images to one source language to a target language. Check it out...
- We only put English and French as source languages because WLA images are most used in those two languages. The goal of this call is precisely to make sure that other languages use WLA images.
- Please be aware that those lists do not automatically update. Contact user:Anthere to get a target language set up-dated.
- We only provided a pre-made set of target language. If you want a different target language, please say so and it will be added for your benefit. Contact user:Anthere to get a target language added

How to add new inspirations for more languages ?
The tool needed is the Glamify tool.
How it works : for a given category on Wikimedia Commons, and based on images for articles based in a source language Wikipedia, the tool suggests images for articles based on another language Wikipedia. If you need more suggestions or updated suggestions
- Option 1: Go to Glamify and follow the steps.
- Option 2: Make a request on user:Anthere talk page, such as "I would like to work on "French/Swahili"
Tech love required : The GLAMify could be technically improved. Phabricator task T211411 describes the needs.
Outcome of the campaign
- Figury
According to the hashtag tool, we had (between July 1, 2021 and Aug. 31, 2021)
- 2299 revisions
- 1308 pages modified
- by 39 users
- w 118 projektach
The tool shows that most of the edits were done on the Hausa Wikipedia (1516 edits), and second best was the English Wikipedia (176 edits)
2 editors pooled the majority of edits: 744 for the first one; 660 for the second, for 306 for the third.
- First editor: User:Salihu Aliyu
- Second editor: User:M_I_Idrees
- Third editor: User:Tarih
- Prize
Whilst all those edits were legitimate within the WPWP campaign, edits made by the first two editors were actually not targetting Wiki Loves Africa images (in spite of being taggued #WLA...). As a consequence, we have decided to offer the Prize to Tarih. Tarih has been a long time editor, and provided a total of 25195 quality edits during WPWP campaign. Congrats Tarih !!!
- Issues and lessons
- We ran into a technical issue from the start of the campaign... for still unexplained reasons, the Glamify tool stopped working. We had the time to generate a list of suggestions in a few languages before it stops operating, but unfortunately only a selection of them, and we have not been able to run the tool to refresh the few suggestions we had generated during the campaign. Unfortunately, providing a list of suggestions was a key element in the campaign. Next year will require a different strategy for suggestions (probably based on quality/valued images, a strategy we intend to work on in 2022)
- As mentioned above, the two main editors actually tagged every single of the edits with #WLA. A sampling of their edits showed that probably none of the images they worked on were in any way related to Wiki Loves Africa. We will assume that it was a mistake and a misunderstanding from their part. It provided review work though, that should have not happened. We are not sure how to avoid that situation, except for trying to be even clearer next time about how to use the tags. It would also have been a good idea to identify that during WPWP, so as to ask them to stop (or use WLA images ;)).
