About the event

Wiki Education Expansion Campaign India, 2019 is an initiative being planned and lead by Women wikimedians of India focused on promotion of education by involving students and senior citizens in different language Wikis. Each participating community can organise offline edit-a-thons ad camps anytime during the year 2019-20 in their local language Wikipedias and create new content. Education when mixed with right amount of experiment, exposure and theory, helps in better understanding of concept and also enhances retention. It is believed that the active involvement of students with gadgets and the knowledge and experience of seniors will together help us create better content on wiki and will also provide the students a lead for better understanding of concepts. Anyone is welcome to join, plan and submit a proposal. The coordinators will help them in organising and evaluating the outcome.

This is the first iteration of this initiative and we will be doing some pilots and awareness sessions before organizing the camps and programs.

As a part of friendship and knowledge exchange, participants will receive a special Wiki gift from another participating community.

Get ready to be surprised! You never know which Wiki community will be sending you love!

Women wikimedians of India have taken up some projects under the theme of education expansion post Women Train the Trainer program 2019. The basic intention is to design and run projects that involve some unconventional methods of involving diverse people in the movement and taking it forward with some fresh ideas.

Motivation

edit

There are two major areas of individuals whose involvement and contribution to Wiki hasn't been explored much till date. There are some active wikimedians who are working with Middle class students and Senior citizens and the basic idea is to bring these two together on a common platform and explore the possibility of having impactful, interesting and reliable contribution to various Wiki projects. There are some NGOs and organisations working with schools across India. To use this platform to raise awareness about Wiki projects and explore the possibility of future collaboration.

The Indian education system is quite complex. The gap between the education system and curriculum of government schools affiliated to State Boards is way too different from the ones affiliated to other Boards like CBSE(CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION) and ICSC (COUNCIL FOR THE INDIAN SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATIONS). In order to bridge this gap and provide exposure to the students from less privileged backgrounds, about the global initiatives and movement, some wikimedians are working on starting an education program for school students where they will be primarily introduced to Wikisource Project and then the zone will be expanded on the basis of their interest and ability. WikiCamp(s) with students and seniors will also be organised. The knowledge that we have about an education program design is based on what we have read about other Education programs and from what we have experienced while working on designing one.
