Problem
editThe majority of GIS data for the world is based on maps that are old and out dated. Underdeveloped parts of the world are faced with using sources of data that are based on colonial maps or sources of information derived a rough surveys.
The GEOnet Names Server from NGA is one of the largest databases of place names available to the general public. The site clearly states that there are errors in the database and to use with caution. http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/
Goals
editOne of the goals of the WikiSpatial project would be to leverage current technologies to create an editable GIS database for the explicit reason to improve geo-spatial accuracy and overall knowledge of our world.
Software
editPostgreSQL could be used as the the opensource database http://www.postgresql.org/
PostgreSQL GIS Extension http://postgis.refractions.net/
MapServer as the Internet GIS Client http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/
