  • Presentations are virtual
  • Previous presentation slides to adapt and reuse if useful

Notes 2 edit

Thomas presented a number of upcoming opportunities, including:

  • Wikimania
  • Wikimedia summit
    • A formal event, which includes a discussion of code of conduct
    • Contact Jack Nunn if interested in sending him talking points
  • Open access week
    • Aimed at academics
    • Organized by both national organizations and individual universities
    • Contact Thomas Shafee if interested in presenting

Sarah invited tech editors to meet in groups to promote social interaction

Andrew highlighted editing disclosure of pay for work

  • template available on journal home page
  • MANDATORY per wikifoundation; please COMPLETE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (no due date, yet)

Andrew shared that communications will come both through personal email plus wikijournal email (MAKE SURE YOU ARE RECEIVING WIKIJOURNAL EMAILS -> avoid spam folders)

Thomas shared update on prior off-line work to ensure that Wikijournal is properly interfaced to Crossref (particularly useful to ensure metadata of citations)

Thomas shared Gwinyai’s note on the PubmedCentral concern, and noted that feedback included, “flag of violation doesn’t provide clarification of how the guidelines were violated; thus, its difficult both to fix now and to avoid the problem in the future” (PLEASE RAISE COMMENTS FOR FUTURE MEETINGS)

Thomas shared update of moving forward with launch of WikiJournal of Psychology, Psychiatry and Behavioral Science (PPB) (which had been placed on hold while recruiting a tech editor team)

  • Need to recruit qualified editorial board
  • Need to recruit first round of articles for first issue
  • Goal is launch volume 1 issue 1 by end of 2023 (including at least 6 articles)
  • NOTE: using other launches for comparison (i.e., ensuring a strong start and continuous stream of publication going forward)

Andrew shared opportunity to contribute to processing articles for WikiJournal of Humanities

  • Needs tech editors to assist processing backlog (finding and reaching out to peer reviewers - WikiJHum editorial board members would need relatively little oversight until umpire stage
  • Needs editorial board to expand/reboot itself with new active editorial board members to get back up to ‘critical mass’ of active editors

Tentative Tech editor assignments:

  • WikiJMed: Stephnie, Michelle, Ellen, Andrew (whip: Roger Watson)
  • WikiJSci: Emma, Peter (whip: Andrew Leung)
  • WikiJHum: Crystal, Iris, Natalie (whip: Sarah Vital)

Andrew led a discussion of how to improve the editorial process with options for how to coordinate interaction among authors, tech editors, and editorial board members

Peer reviews

  • Be conscious of fake peer reviewers or those who are colluding with the author by giving stellar peer reviews
  • Maybe insist authors suggest reviewers (mandatory), and then have tech editors screen those for obvious issues (e.g. COIs, suspicious publishing histories)
    • I.e. emphasize author-suggested list and filter out the rare inappropriate recommendations
    • Can always supplement with our standard process of finding peer reviewers ‘from scratch’
    • Easy to implement (i.e. just change a form field from optional to mandatory)
  • One approach may be to leverage AltMetric data to identify potential reviewers
    • Even reaching out on twitter (or other soc. media) when articles are submitted
    • Even non-specialists and non-experts can give super helpful feedback for e.g. article non-technical summaries

Action items edit

  • Andrew following up on registration process for the Wikimania
  • Jack to follow up on Wikimedia summit
  • Thomas to follow up with Leptospirosis on integration of material to Wikipedia
