WikiFieldGuides
WikiFieldGuides is a proposal for a new Wikimedia project. The idea of WikiFieldGuides is to provide an online resource for particular types of natural world fields guides, for example a WikiFieldGuide to birds, a WikiFieldGuide to reptiles, a WikiFieldGuide to plants, etc.

This proposal differs from the WikiSpecies project in that it is not about cataloging species; rather it is about providing information to help with species identification. This information might include text, audio, imagery, range maps, etc., all of the common elements found in field guides today.
The first proposed WikiFieldGuide is a WikiFieldGuide to birds. This is primarily because birding field guides are by far the most well known and commonly used type of field guide, but also because birding information is very dynamic... ranges change yearly, and species turn up daily in unusual places. This accurate and up-to-date information can be made available instantly on the wiki.
