WikiCred/2022 CFP/Audiovisual recordings of oral knowledge of Yoruba traditional approaches to reproductive health

Our idea is to record quality audiovisuals of Yoruba's indigenous approaches to reproductive health in the form of oral tradition. There are cultural approaches to reproductive health from country to country. Traditional healers adopt different approaches to treating infertility in both males and females, and this varies from culture to culture. The Yoruba and Chinese traditional healers do not adopt the same approach and have different methods of treating mastitis for example.

What is your idea?

This project aims at documenting Yoruba traditional approaches to reproductive health using audiovisuals. These include the Yoruba traditional approach managing psychosis, mastitis, genital mutilation, infertility, and family planning to mention a few.

Why is it important?

There had been some knowledge gaps about traditional approaches to reproductive health. Although several types of research had been conducted and published about reproductive health in general, only a few focus on “Yoruba traditional approaches”. Little or nothing has been orally documented on Yoruba indigenous or traditional approaches to reproductive health and released under a free license. This project is important in bridging this gap.

Is your project already in progress?

No. Although, we held the first meeting with the project team prior to submitting this proposal and we have done something similar in the past (see Audiovisuals of Yoruba Indigenous Vocations)

How is this project relevant to credibility and Wikipedia?

Audiovisual evidence generally improves information credibility. Audiovisual recording of oral knowledge of Yoruba traditional approaches to reproductive health would help improve the credibility, reliability, and accuracy of existing textual contents on Wikipedia, and could serve as an additional citation for existing contents that have been written on related topics (a form of oral citation).

What is the ultimate impact of this project?

The ultimate impact of this project includes but is not limited to

1. Recording of at least 10 audiovisual recordings of oral knowledge of Yoruba traditional approaches to reproductive health, and each recording not less than 20-30 minutes in length

2. Uploading at least 10 audiovisual recordings of oral knowledge of Yoruba traditional approaches to reproductive health to Wikimedia Commons under a free license (CC-BY-SA 4.0)

3. Using the audiovisuals recording on existing related articles

4. Publication of the project outcome on Wikimedia Diff and any other platforms recommended by WikiCred

5. The audiovisual recordings would be shared with the National Library of Nigeria, other libraries (public and private libraries), the National Archive, academic institutions, and the National Association Of Nigerian Traditional Medicine Practitioners.

Can your project scale?

Yes, our project is scalable and measurable, as seen in our ultimate impact section above.

Why are you the people to do it?

We are the people to do it because we are Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, a Wikimedia affiliate with the mandate to improve, promote and bridge knowledge gaps relating to the Yoruba language, people, and culture on Wikipedia. The logistics of moving from one location to another - We plan to hire a bus that would convey the crew from one location to another throughout the fieldwork
