Audiovisuals of Yoruba Indigenous Vocations is a project designed and implemented by the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group to document, and preserve Yoruba indigenous vocations that are going into extinction with the advent of technology. The primary aims of the project is to create the material for use on Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia and for other educational purposes outside of Wikimedia projects.

Audiovisuals of Yoruba Indigenous Vocations behind the scenes of basket weaving

Yoruba indigenous vocations are often associated with family. In Yorubaland, each of the extended families are known for a particular vocation(s). These vocations are inherited and passed from generation to generation. Members of the same family rarely learn a different vocation. Some of these vocations are gender-specific. Examples of such vocations are "Agbede" (goldsmithing) and "Ode" (hunting) are unique to male and Idiri (hair-making), and Ikoko-mimo (pottery) are commons for women. The Yoruba people sometimes give their children names that reflect their vocations. Name such as Ayangalu for drummers, and Ogunwale for hunters are typical examples.

With the advent of technology, these chains of vocations have been distorted and children no longer practice their family vocations. Nowadays, when the father died, no child is interested in continuing the vocations, and this makes them endangered and put these vocations at high risk of going into extinction.

To document, and preserve the knowledge of Yoruba indigenous vocations, the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group with support from the Wikimedia Foundation is recording audiovisual of the Yoruba indigenous vocations for use on Wikipedia articles, and for other educational purposes . The documented materials are hosted on Wikimedia Commons, and uploaded to YouTube under a Creative Commons License.

The Yoruba people are a West African ethnic group that mainly inhabits parts of Nigeria, Benin and Togo. The areas of these countries primarily inhabited by Yorubas are often collectively referred to as Yorubaland. The Yorubas constitute more than 47 million people in Africa, are a few hundred thousand outside the continent, and bear further representation among members of the African diaspora. The vast majority of the Yoruba population is today within the country of Nigeria, where they make up 15.5% of the country's population according to CIA estimations, making them one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa. Most Yoruba people speak the Yoruba language, which is the Niger-Congo language with the largest number of native or L1 speakers.
