Wikidata is a database about anything covered in Wikipedia (and then some) that anyone can use or contribute to. On that basis, a community has formed around the idea - now known as WikiCite - of collaborating to curate bibliographic metadata about publications and citations, along with information about related entities like authors, institutions, publishers or research topics. Since then, Wikidata and WikiCite have co-evolved in both their potential and limitations. This presentation will pick some examples to illustrate that journey and invite the audience to think along to help imagine what comes next.

Daniel Mietchen is a researcher at the School of Data Science of the University of Virginia. He is interested in integrating open and collaborative research and education workflows with the web, particularly through Wikimedia platforms, to which he actively contributes. Trained as a biophysicist, his research topics range from the subcellular to the organismic level, from biochemical and embryological to geological time scales, from specimens to biodiversity informatics, from data points to data science and to the role of research and education in sustainable development.
