Theme of presentation موضوع الجلسة

A historic overview of the premises and evolution of "encyclopedism" to Wikipedia, with a particular focus on the role of the Oriental/Arabic philosophers of the Levant and Al Andalus in the preservation and distribution of ancient knowledge, the technological arsenal of the collection and organisation of knowledge and loss of knowledge.

Abstract ملخص

Before the earliest partly preserved attempts of encyclopedism the Naturalis Historiae and the Chinese Yongle Da Dian, humans already tried to preserve knowledge. Preserving knowledge is the flip side of the coin of education, to hand accumulated knowledge to the following generations. Wikipedia is the contemporary culmination of that genetically engrained desire. This presentation takes you on a journey of the last 2 millenia, how technology has allowed us to collect and preserve knowledge, how that technology has evolved and how it impacted on knowledge. Much knowledge has been irrecoverably lost in the process. The presentation comes with a strong warning : some principles governing Wikipedia risk causing more loss of essential and very ancient knowledge. Knowledge comes in many different forms, and some carriers are more readily accepted then others. Knowledge also represents content and some content might be untrue (disproven), some content might be true and verified but undesirable, so what lessons do we, the contemporary Wikicommunity, have to learn to avoid the losses and mistakes of the past, and what lessons have the old masters like Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd and Ibn Khaldoun to teach the humanity and the Arab World.
