WIKIEDU Technical Training in Uganda 2024
Introduction
editThe Wikisoccerthons project idea was developed in November 2019 at Wiki Indaba in Abuja, then the Usergroup planned for implementation of this pilot since 16 May 2020, and was approved as one of the usergroup's annual projects on 20 August 2020. In 2024, the project will run from 1st August to 30th November with the aim of creating & improving Wikipedia articles, translate existing articles from English to Luganda, upload soccer media files on Wikimedia Commons and do Wikidata items for Federations, Associations, Football Clubs, Players, Stadiums and Coaches.
Goals
editIncrease Documentation:
- Enhance the online presence of Ugandan football by creating and improving Wikipedia articles and uploading images to commons on notable figures, clubs, and events.
Community Engagement:
- Foster community involvement through trainings, editathons, and outreach activities to encourage contributions to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
Capacity Building:
- Build the skills and knowledge of the volunteering participants in researching, writing, and editing Wikipedia content.
- In addition, teach participants on how to upload media files to commons.
Objectives
editContent Creation and Improvement:
- Write 50 new Wikipedia articles on notable Ugandan footballers, coaches, clubs, federations, associations, and leagues.
- Update 100 existing articles with the latest information and images.
- Upload at least 1000 new soccer images on Wikimedia Commons.
- Translate 100 articles on English Wikipedia into Luganda Wikipedia
- Create 300 Wikidata items about footballers, coaches, clubs, federations, associations, and leagues.
Trainings and Editathons
edit- Conduct 2 training sessions and editathons to teach and engage participants.
Outreach and Partnerships
edit- Organize 8 outreach events including football matches and partnership meetings to promote the project.
- Establish partnerships with at least 4 organizations and football clubs to support and collaborate on the project.

Partnerships
editPotential Partners:
- Football Associations:
- Engage with the Uganda Football Association like FUFA and local football clubs especially those in the first Division.
- Media Organizations:
- Partner with media houses to promote the project and its activities.
Engagement Plan:
- Schedule meetings to discuss potential collaboration.
- Develop partnership agreements outlining mutual benefits and responsibilities.
- Regularly update partners on project progress and involve them in key activities.
Targets
editArticle Metrics:
- 50 new articles to be created.
- 100 existing articles to be updated.
- 1000 new media files to be uploaded.

- 300 Wikidata items
Participation Metrics:
- Two training sessions and Editathon conducted with at least 30 participants.
Outreach Metrics:
- 8 outreaches at different football matches
- At least 4 partnerships to be established.
Engagement Metrics:
- Increased participation from the community in Wikipedia editing and Wikimedia Commons.
- Positive feedback from participants and partners on the project's impact.
Action Plan Implementation

- Project Leads: Oversee the entire project.
- Coordinator: Manage day-to-day activities and logistics.
- Jury Coordinator: Organize and manage the jury process for selecting winners.
- Communication Team: Handle outreach, social media, and partnership communication.
- Wikipedia Content Team: Focus on researching, writing, and updating articles.
- Photography Team: Capture high-quality images for articles.
- Budget Allocation:
- Training and Editathon Costs: Venue, materials, refreshments.
- Outreach Event Costs: Venue, promotional materials, transportation.
- Branded Materials: T-shirts, caps, water bottles.
- Prizes: Allocate funds for the winners as specified.
- Monitoring and Reporting:
- Implement regular progress reports to track activities and outcomes.
- Conduct evaluations after each major activity to assess impact and gather feedback.
- Adjust plans and strategies based on evaluation results to improve future activities.
- Monthly check-in to update on progress
