Support of projects with and for OpenStreetMap (OSM)

The open geodata project OpenStreetMap and Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, or Wikimedia Commons pursue a common goal with the collection and provision of Open Knowledge. At the same time, they complement each other in terms of content and mutually benefit from each other. Wikimedia Deutschland therefore supports the exchange between the Wikimedia communities and the OSM community and the implementation of joint projects financially and organizationally.

Monuments, Stolpersteine (commemorative pavement stones), city fountains, etc., for example, are equally relevant for several open projects. They are recorded in Wikipedia as list entries, in OSM as "points of interest," and in Wikidata as database objects and are in part linked with each other. Thus, an exchange and joint activities of the respective communities, for example in the form of edit-a-thons, mapping tours, or joint workshops, not only can specifically advance the expansion of the respective knowledge platforms, but also bring about additional synergy effects. Even projects that primarily or exclusively benefit OpenStreetMap can usually be supported.

Offer

Wikimedia Deutschland offers a range of support programs that can be useful for joint projects. This could for example be:

  • Provision of rooms, insurance, catering / meals and the reimbursement of travel costs, e.g. for the organization or participation in:
    • Workshops for presenting the projects to each other
    • Mapping tours, e.g. to record facilities for OSM and Wikivoyage/Wikidata (example project (German only))
    • Mapping parties and edit-a-thons, e.g. for the systematic recording of certain subject areas in OSM, Wikipedia lists and Wikidata and the mutual linking of information relevant to all pages, such as Stolpersteine, architectural monuments, Berlin water pumps, and the like
    • Conferences like WikiCon (German only), State of the Map oder FOSSGIS-Conference
  • Loan or purchase of equipment, for example:
    • GPS devices for recording georeferenced objects
    • Cameras for Mapillary recordings
    • Drones suitable for aerial photography and mapping
    • Video projectors for OSM regulars’ tables or other events

This is only a selection of the possibilities. Additional ideas and individual requests are always welcome.

Please send an e-mail with your request to community@wikimedia.de.

If the planned costs of the project exceed 500 euros, a written project proposal is necessary. You can find additional information on this page (German only). You can also list your project in the Idea Portal (German only). Of course, we’re happy to help you with any questions that may arise.
