Translate some names for hundreds software projects including MediaWiki edit

Hello, I'm writing you because you subscribed to a Language support team. As you know, Wikimedia projects exist in almost 300 languages; supporting them all is a big effort so we partner with other organisations. One small but visible thing we miss is that many interwiki links in sidebar (among others) don't offer a translation of the language name when hovered. We're now able to translate 100 more language names in your language.

If you're interested, I can create you an account to submit translations on the CLDR web tool (within June 14): please send an email to ask one and I'll follow up with instructions. On CLDR you can translate and tweak many other things, if you desire; your work will impact hundreds of software projects. Thanks, Nemo 17:58, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions edit

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:19, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

No WLM-US banner edit

Hello Romaine. Thank you for your work with Wiki Loves Monuments. However, Wikimedia DC (as the organization managing the US contest) is running its own customized banner this year, and will not need to be included with the regular Wiki Loves Monuments banner. Thanks, harej (talk) 04:34, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello Harej, Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States was added to the list of participating countries. It confused me already. So can I safely conclude that the United States is not participating in Wiki Loves Monuments this year? Romaine (talk) 04:43, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Re: edit

Hi there, thanks for your note. As you certainly have noticed, VE gets updated, sometimes even quite significantly, once a week. Keeping up with the documentation is therefore quite hard, and that's why we actually don't insist on translations that much (we do post some generic notes on the newsletter from time to time, but those appeals are not much effective. If we wanted people to actively work on translations, we'd ask that in many other different ways). So what those appeals are good for is that when someone actually gets to translate something, s/he will notice something not so clear, or outdated, and so on, and will tell us about it. At that point, upon specific remarks, we're able to intervene or even just to say "you are completely right, please do change the page as you suggest". We do not "own" documentation: while we do want to provide good documentation and keep it up to date, whatever is on those pages necessarily needs further scrutiny. This is in a way similar to the more generic process of writing; one would think the writer knows best, but it's actually the people who review, proofread and copyedit who are able to point to flaws (and fix them). In our case, my humble opinion is that documentation needs to be very easy to understand for editors, especially not particularly experienced ones: while the documentation lives at mediawiki.org, it will probably always assume that people are "techie" enough to understand it the way the way product managers, developers and experienced code contributors can (and that's why we need non-expert eyes to actually tell us where it is failing). So: the work of updating docs like the user guide is always ongoing, but in the meantime, it is still quite useful if people bring their own language progress to high levels, because we would be mostly adding content rather than changing it (so their work would not be in vain, and anyway it's easier to make minor updates in time rather than having to go from 0% to 100% in the same day); more generally speaking, software documentation the way we know it might change significantly when projects like mw:Dev.wikimedia.org are fully active (a colleague liaison of mine also has this idea that at some point in time we should be able to write different kind of documentation with different audiences in mind). I'll make sure someone addresses your point when it's possible. Thank you, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 11:21, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
