Doubt

Hello, Dferg.

I'd like to know if it's true that only stewards can use {{yes}} and/or {{no}} templates in polls. I haven't found any information about that on metawiki.

Otherwise, I'd ask you to revert this edit, once editing others' comments is not recommended and the action hasn't been performed by a steward or administrator.

Best regards, Ruy Pugliesi 13:32, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello Ruy. As far as I know the only regulation (if it can be called as such) regarding {{yes}} and {{no}} templates is at the top of the Steward requests/Global permissions page which states that those templates may be used by stewards. I have not found any other guideline regarding those templates outside the page mentioned above. I hope that this answer your question. Best regards & have a nice day. --dferg ☎ talk 17:59, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

--by Màñü飆¹5 talk 06:32, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Hola Manuel.

Gracias anticipadas. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Guardian Misterioso (talk) at 04:48, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Hola Dferg

Steward banners

Hey Dferg,

I wanted to let you know that I deactivated the steward banner campaign that was set up to turn on automatically at 00:00 UTC. I'll activate it when we take down the Wiki10 banners (and all our banners) but that will be past UTC because of the time zone thing with the United States etc. It may happen tonight after the San Francisco party but if not it will be no later then tomorrow PST. Jalexander 19:43, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Isn't easier to change the hour of starting? We need those banners working and they should have started working yesterday :-)
--dferg ☎ talk 19:46, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Since we haven't finalized the exact 'take down' time I didn't want to set it specifically because it would lend me to setting it later to lean on the safe side (and possibly forgetting to turn it on early when I took down the rest). This way I can make sure to flip them on when the rest get flipped off (believe me I'll remember :) most likely tonight after the party) . I know you guys want these up as soon as possible, and I do too we need more stewards. Jalexander 20:08, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I enabled it for 1/17 00:00 UTC as a last resort thing but it'll go up earlier then that. On a sidenote did you guys mean to have that showing 100% of the time? The current settings will do that, if we want it to be 50% we need to have an equal weight blank banner in there as well. (50 weight banner divided by 50 total weight = 100% Jalexander 20:19, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Put them up about an hour ago, 50% (25% empty 25% wikimania scholorship banners). All yours :) Jalexander 09:03, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

missing stewards

Hei Dferg, is there any reason that Rdsmith4, Thogo and Sj are missing on this side? Don't they want to be stewards anymore or do you have simply forgotten them? I only recognized that Rdsmith4 isn't active anymore but what's with the others? I think we need them all here if possible. ;-) Greetings --Geitost diskusjon 14:44, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello Geitost. They have untill the 2011 elections starts to put his/her statement, as others have done. I've already sent days ago a reminder via our mailing list that confirmation statements are being acepted. Yesterday Mav and Bastique added theirs and I expect the remaining ones to do that soon. Rdsmith seems to be absent this days but others (ie: Thogo) are active and I think they've just forgotten about that or are simply waiting a few days to post it. Regards, -- Dferg ☎ talk 14:53, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Ah, thank you for the information, I didn't understand the system quite well. Perhaps I'll leave a notice on Thogos German user page and hope also Sj will not forget about it. :-) It's not so easy to find enough good new stewards that fill the gap. After the 2010 elections (34 stewards), there were 3 stewards less than after the 2009 elections (37 stewards). That's not good cause I think then you all have more to do with more projects and more articles in them and so on. Kind regards --Geitost diskusjon 15:03, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
PS: There are now less stewards than after the december elections in 2006 (31). --Geitost diskusjon 15:08, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes. This year 4 stewards resigned. We currently have 30 stewards. I do not know how many will be elected & confirmed/removed but still the numbers are rather low given the large ammount of work we currently have to do. Sadly I think that each year less people seems to be interested in steward-like stuff, SWMT & the like. -- Dferg ☎ talk 15:36, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
I left a note on Thogo's German side.
There have been 5 removals last year, so if we might need more than the 37 stewards in Febr. 2009 and perhaps some are not to be confirmed now, I think there have to be elected more than about 12 new stewards to fill the gap. That seems to be nearly not reachable. I asked a very good German CU (Bdk) with cross wiki experiences about stewardship because CU experiences have been asked for in the past elections but she doesn't have the time. We have only 3 CUs in de.WP, that's also very little. People who already have many jobs in projects have more chances because of more experiences but then have no time for stewardship anymore or get burned out. :-( And the ones with no CU/OS experiences haven't so good chances.
Bdk said that it wood be good to split the steward jobs, especially CU and perhaps also OS, from the other steward jobs with much work load. I think that this would be a good way for the future to handle this dilemma. Perhaps the global interest in the 2011 steward elections could be a start for a discussion about it. Could you perhaps initiate a special side for this needed discussion? I don't know enough about the meta structure to find a good place for that but I think it would be necessary. Kind regards --Geitost diskusjon 16:07, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
I do not think that having access or experience with CU/OS access is a must-be for being a candidate for steward elections. Perhaps it might be a plus that demonstrates community trust, but I personally would not oppose anybody for not having access to those tools. Moreover: I've opposed candidates in the past that having access to those tools, just didn't met my other own standards. I look for a lot of things when voting somebody for steward: one of them is trust, but there are more.
Splitting jobs does not seem to me like a good idea to me. We really do not have great backlogs of CU/OS requests & would require creating another "possition". OS requests are handled within minutes if are done via IRC or a couple of hours (even less) if they're done via our private OTRS queue. CU requests if they're urgent are also processed very quickly, if not they suffer a delay of a couple of days or a week in extreme cases (not many stewards are interested in them I think). Global sysops are helping us in the small wiki patrolling area which is the most time consuming. If you are still interested in starting the discussion you may want to try first Talk:Stewards. Regards, -- Dferg ☎ talk 18:13, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
That's interesting. It's not so clear for non-stewards what you are doing all the time. Perhaps it would be an idea if you stewards would set up another side in the future where you list the things that stewards have to do, and also the ones that need most of the time or are to be done most. So it'll be easier for the normal users to see what kind of skills are needed for stewardship. It'll probably be easier to vote and also easier to find good candidates for that in the future. It's good that there are global sysops so it's probably not that severe not having that many stewards as some years ago. But discussion about it can't be bad. ;-) I'll see what might be useful there. --Geitost diskusjon 19:47, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
I think you stewards have something to do about the gap. You can't read German, can you? Thogo ain't gonna candidate anymore so we'll have just one steward from German wikipedia left (perhaps Barras will make it but he's more on other projects like simple.wiki). Sounds no good. :-( --Geitost diskusjon 17:32, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
What a complete sadness. I'm sorry, I do not speak German but I used GTrans. I hope he reconsiders. Thogo is a valuable steward whose loose will be painfull. Regards, -- Dferg ☎ talk 18:13, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes, and I've also seen that Mike has retired the last year who has been a very active steward in the past. Is there perhaps a chance that one or more of these retired ones could come back again? Do they have to candidate again until today 24 o'clock or are they to go through the confirmation process instead of this? Shizhao did this the last time without being steward the year before. Then you had a little bit of time left to find such retired stewards that I don't know until now. ;-) --Geitost diskusjon 19:47, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
“Thogo ain't gonna candidate anymore” … that's not what he said. He just said that the reasons why his confirmation page is not created will be published soon. Kind regards, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:51, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

┌───────────────────────┘
I'm glad to see that this is not definitive. Yes, Mike loss was very sad for me. He was a very active steward. I'm afraid that already having passed some time they'll have to nominate themselves again. See for example Wpedzich, which is a former steward and is running again. As for Shizhao, he was serving on the ombudsman commission; due to conflict of interest issues members of the commission have their checkuser & steward tools temporary suspended during his term. Shizhao opted to have his steward confirmation after his term in the commission expired. Another steward who I miss is birdy, which was very active too. -- Dferg ☎ talk 20:13, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Oh, that's why, I didn't know Shizhao had been in that commission. Thanks for the infos.
I understand Thogo's answer as decision and definite, the specific tone isn't so easy to translate, so it has been a free translation of the sense about that. ;-) He doesn't write a statement for confirmation is going to come the next days but that there's a reason that he doesn't stand on that side, that reason is going to follow. But if he would set up a statement for confirmation it'll be good. I don't expect that anymore but perhaps someone can convince him about it, who knows? But if he has definite reasons about not candidating then nobody can convice him. I understand it that way. But let's wait for what he'll say in a few days about it. --Geitost diskusjon 22:55, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

CentralNotice changes

Howdy Dferg, please note that CentralNotice has changed significantly in the past year and copying old banner code into new banners may cause problems, as happened recently with the steward election banner.[5] Specifically, if you want to show banners only to anonymous or logged in users, you should now use the "Display to: []Anonymous []Logged in users" checkboxes. You no longer need to create separate "Anon" and "User" divs in the same banner. Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers! Kaldari 22:47, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
