Levantine Arabic Wikipedia

edit

Hello @HitomiAkane, I recently came across your fascinating story about the Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia. Thanks for writing it up! I'm part of a group working to launch the Levantine Arabic Wikipedia. I'm still learning the language myself but am helping out in other ways. Do you happen to know any Levantine Arabic? Even if not, would you consider offering some guidance? We could really benefit from any strategies you'd be willing to share, as we're encountering a lot of resistance and criticism similar to what you faced. If you are interested, we would be very glad if you could join our discord server. Thanks so much in advance! TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 21:35, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @TheJoyfulTentmaker, of course I'm familiar with Levantine Arabic, I'm Syrian. Regarding the project, as I remember it was canceled for good, but any way make sure of this point. And yes I can offering guidance/help whenever I have time, and the first advice is to forget about all resistances and criticisms, next you need to focus on building/important modules and templates, this will make it easier to create and enhance new articles, consider every modules and templates related to wikidata, as the data from WikiData will enrich the articles. and try to unify the display style of everything. Let me know when and where you need help, and I'll try my best whenever I have time. HitomiAkane (talk) 23:48, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much for offering help, @HitomiAkane! The project is not canceled, it was marked as eligible by @Sotiale in August 2021, based on their discussion with the Language Committee. (Sotiale: would you be able to confirm, so there is no doubt that the project is not canceled?) Now all we need is to create some content in the incubator and demonstrate that there will be sustained interest. @FunLater is a native speaker from Lebanon and they are regularly contributing. If we could find 2 or 3 speakers who can contribute regularly, the project will be launched under its own domain, apc.wikipedia.org. I think after launch, we can focus on modules and templates, but for now all we can do is add text or image content, mostly. If you could watch the Levantine Arabic incubator project and contribute anything you like from time to time, that would be great. Also, I'm curious about how you solved the standardization/ortography problem? There is no good reference that we can use for determining how to write certain words, so for now we are either using the wiki discussion or the discord channel to standardize. Do you think this is a good approach for standardization? TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 02:08, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
AS you can see here I was active on the project and tried to enliven it, I faced the opposition, then I read somewhere the project was not to have its own domain, anyway, I'll try to add as many articles as I can when I have time (I was retired from editing 2 years ago and focused on adminship in arz project, as the personal-harassments to me were mentally hard especially after creating over 1.5 M articles there). Regarding the standardization, I believe the project can follow the arz project rules, in general any Levantine Arabic delicate can be used, but I think Damascus delicate is common among all, and even the rest of Arabic countries due to Syrian drama/dubbed Turkish drama, so this may be a start to build something like this in the future (which well be open to discussion for a long time). Lastly, I say (as an Admin in ARZ project, we need a supervisor who have admin privilege as we will face a lot of vandalism) HitomiAkane (talk) 04:30, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, these suggestions will be super helpful! I remember seeing your name in the top contributors to the apc project, but I wasn't sure if you would have continued interest in Levantine, so I'm super happy to learn that you do. A meaningful milestone was reached over the past year: the language code "apc" is now officially recognized within the MediaWiki software, thanks to @FunLater and @A455bcd9, so you can now choose "apc" as your interface language in any edition of Wikipedia and other projects. We can be optimistic that the apc.wikipedia launch can happen in the near future if we can demonstrate some sustained progress. Regarding adminship, would you be interested in becoming a temp admin, since you have the experience? I don't think there will be a lot of admin work initially, but one can never know when we will need it, so I agree that it is a good idea to have an admin. TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 07:23, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we overtook the technical (recognition of apc in MediaWiki) and procedural (merge of apc and ajp in the ISO standard) barriers to pave the way for the creation of a Levantine Wikipedia. Now it's all about the community. I don't speak the language so I can't contribute but you're right @TheJoyfulTentmaker: if you find 5 motivated people who regularly contribute, you'll get there. Good luck! A455bcd9 (talk) 09:07, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you @A455bcd9, @TheJoyfulTentmaker I don't know the process of getting temp adminship in incubator projects, but anyway I'll try to contribute on regular basis, and we will see how this project will do, I hope the best. HitomiAkane (talk) 09:59, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
You can follow this guide to get temporary admin right: Incubator:Administrators
We have a group on Discord: https://discord.gg/xdBtSrq3rP. Let me know through here if you join. I think collaborating is important so we can stay motivated.
Your help would be amazing and greatly appreciated. And regarding standardization, I now think using one dialect across all pages is a good idea, and I believe that standardizing the spelling will be more professional and maybe improve readability.
Thank you! FunLater (talk) 13:16, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@TheJoyfulTentmaker Thank you for the nomination, I'm trying to figure out some stuff that would be helpful for the future, I don't use Discord, but I'll join for the project. HitomiAkane (talk) 23:07, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
