Hello ChongDae. Please re-apply at Requests for permissions once you have permission at the English Wikipedia for Chobot. Angela

Re: Chobot

edit

Hi, I'm an administrator at the Vietnamese Wikipedia. Feel free to run the bot; just make sure to follow the rules, of course. We don't have our own policy yet, since a number of interwiki bots pass through vi: all the time, but you're the first to ask for permission. Thanks! :) – Minh Nguyễn (talk, blog) 03:06, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi again, could you please setup Chobot to sort interwiki links according to their display name, rather than by their ISO codes. This is the practice at the Vietnamese Wikipedia, and I've noticed that your bot is using ISO codes instead. Please see vi:User talk:Gangleri#Re: Interwiki guidelines and User talk:Gangleri#alphabetical order. Thanks. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, blog) 18:51, 27 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

I stop running bot on vi:. Could you explicitly write down the order of languages? I cannot decide the order of non-latin alphabet languages in vi:. If it is done, I will report the bug on pywikipedia developers. (Other bot operators also use the same program.) For your reference, the order for english wikipedia is as follows. It sorts "Bahasa Indonesia" as "I", not "B". -- ChongDae 19:18, 27 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

       self.alphabetic = [
           'aa','ab','af','am','ang','ar','an','roa-rup','as','ast','av','ay',

           'zh-cn','zh-tw']

Here's my modified list – I just put all these into an interwiki link list, transliterated any non-Latin-based name as it appeared in the list, then alphabetized it all:

       vi-sorting-order = [
           'aa','af','als','am','ang','ab','ar','an','roa-rup','as','ast','gn','av','ay',

           'tr','tk','tw','uk','ur','vo','wa','wo','ts','yi','yo','zh','zh-cn','zh-tw']

I found some ideosynchracies in the order, such as putting vi: directly after tlh:, which doesn't make sense for any sorting scheme. In addition, I removed any duplicate entries (there were a few of those). The sort order that you provided above is decent – for example, it puts fi: under S, not under F. I suppose putting languages like Indonesian under I instead of B makes more sense, but this is the way we've been sorting the links at vi: for a long time now. In the future, we may come back and review this practice.

Thanks for your help and understanding!

           'wo','fiu-vro','ts','ii','yi','yo','zh','zh-cn','zh-tw']

There are a few codes that don't work because the wikis haven't been setup yet: ban:, bug:, gay:, chm:, and udm:. Also, there are Wikipedias currently in testing at Test-wp, so these codes can be added once those editions are setup:

[[nds-nl:]]Nederlaands-Nedersaksische, placed before nl:
[[zh-yue:]]中文(粵語), placed at the end
[[gem:]]Seeltersk, placed after sco:
[[bdf:]]Basa mBanyumasan, placed after jv:
[[mis-ryu:]]Ucinaːguci, placed before uk:
[[chn:]]Chinuk Wawa, placed after ny:
[[lad:]]Ladino / לאדינו, placed after ku:
[[war:]]Waray-Waray, placed after wa:
[[gem-zws:]]Zeêuws, placed before zh:

Hope this helps.

copy from w:User talk:Tarmok#Interwiki sorting order:

When talking with a vi: user, their order is simiar to et:. It can be merged into one. I guess that you are responsible to the order in et:. Please visit my talk page in meta and leave your opinion. -- ChongDae 19:29, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

first clarification, in ET I just happen to be more interested in this sorting, but that's about it, no one have given me honour to decide and rule about how the links should be sorted. We have general agreement to use language own names for sorting (vs language codes) and currently is going "official" voting to make it official policy.

So my lists and notes for bots are basically expressing one's opinion. this said, now about the sorting. I have been involved with this sorting as building my own small tool to ease manual sorting and related to this made some research. The ordered list is visible here w:User:TarmoK/TKtools. I added there also "real" links so it can be seen how the links look in reality. As I have made best effort to get this list correct, I'm sure there may be errors and I'm updating as getting know them. (And Bahasa Indonesia-type of cases i've been using always first letter)

in this list are some, noticed above, wikis which are not yet existing; I have left them as they don't influence the tool work. about the rest I see some differences some I'm able to justify but the ones which are not based on latin alphabet I can't be sure.

here's the differencies I noticed whne comparing it with VI version (excluding the non existent wikis):
  • 'to','fa','fo','fr','fy','ff','fur' different order
  • 'csb','kw','ky','rw','rn','sw','kv','kg','ht','kj','ku','lo' different order
  • 'nah','fj','nl','cr','ne','ja','ce','no','nb','nn','oc','or','om','ng' different order (nb doesn't exist anymore, it's no)
  • uz is too early and generally from there until end there's a lot of different order cases
  • tokipona doesn't exist anymore in wikimedia domain

ET list in bot software is earlier version of the list (based on earlier version of my own list) I left to bot development page when I got a bit annoyed of all the bots who visited ET and sort of "messed" things around

Hope you can make something useful out of it --TarmoK 21:54, 29 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

           'wo','ts','ii','yi','yo','zh','zh-tw','zh-cn']

Some explanations regarding my changes:

gay:
Gayo language (Bahasa Gayo) – it was in ChongDae's version of et: (Eesti)
ban:
Balinese language (Basa Bali) – doesn't exist yet; should be right before jv: (Basa Jawa)
bug:
Buginese language (Basa Ugi) – should be right after su: (Basa Sunda)
to:
Tongan language (faka-Tonga) – should be right before fa: (Fârsi)
fo:
Faroese language (Føroyskt) – should be right before fr: (Français)
I'm in opinion that it should be after fur (Furlan), because ø is in end of the alphabet, see en:Faroese_language#Alphabet --TarmoK 18:41, 31 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
kk:
Kazakh language (translit. Qazaq) – should be right before pi: (translit. Pāli)
where you took this translit.? (It seems to me be just english way of writing) If we look the language name link what appears in left, then there is қазақша which freely turned to latin alphabet from cyrillic is kazaksha (see also en:Kazakh language --TarmoK 18:41, 31 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
ky:
Kyrgyz language (translit. Kirgizca being used) – should be right after rw: (Kinyarwanda)
lo:
Lao language (translit. Lao being used; ພາສາລາວ, which is much longer, is translit. as Phaasaa Laao) – should be right before la: (Latina)
nah:
Nahuatl language (Nahuatl) – I put it right before fj: (Na Vosa Vakaviti), since I don't account for spaces when alphabetizing
ng:
Ndonga language (Oshiwambo) – should be right after om: (Oromoo)
uz:
Uzbek language (translit. O'zbek) – should be right after ug: (Oyghurque)
tlh:
Klingon language (tlhIngan Hol) – should be right after ti: (Tigrigna)

Thanks for pointing out that page to me; I hadn't noticed many of the mistakes I made.

The order that TarmoK and I have worked out seems more comprehensive than the one at fi:. Who should we contact about their list (or where should we ask about it)? – Minh Nguyễn (talk, blog) 20:52, 30 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

This finnish page was my starting point, but there are many changes and additions, what have come along. For finnish page option is to leave note to this page talk page.
It's nice page you, ChongDae, have made. I think, It maybe good to add (sub?)page with table of language code, language own name in language alphabet, language name in latin alphabet and maybe also link to language article(?) I added to the talk page there something for starters. --TarmoK 19:10, 31 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

You have requested that the en:Sakura article be merged with en:Prunus serrulata. I strongly oppose this suggested merger. The Sakura article is as much about a cultural phenomenum as it is about the plant, while the Prunis serrulata article is only about the plant (and should be only about the plant). [Butterfly]

edit

This bot stripped a lot of the interwiki links for [Butterfly]. I replaced the one to the German wiki [Schmetterlinge], as it's the only one whose translation I am sure of, but maybe the others should be replaced as well? I'm kind of new, so I don't want to overstep here, so if they were removed for a reason, I can go back and pull mine off. (Maaya 21:39, 14 July 2005 (UTC)) (de:Benutzer:Maaya)Reply

See de:Benutzer Diskussion:Maaya

  • Hmmm. Here's the best I can explain it. The word Schmetterlinge itself is the plural form of Schmetterling, which means butterfly. In the German Wikipedia, Schmetterlinge refers to the order 'Lepidoptera', which includes moths and butterflies (as you know). However, the de:Kategorie:Schmetterlinge includes listings for both moths and butterflies. The German word for moths is de:Motten, which links to the English page for en:Moths. I'm not really sure why the de:Lepidoptera page redirects to the Schmetterlinge one, maybe Schmetterlinge is more easily recognised? (Maaya 14:24, 15 July 2005 (UTC)) (de:Benutzer:Maaya)Reply

zh-min-nan's page(zh-min-nan:Ang-á-oē) is not about Manga(japanese comics), but general comics. The links should be in da:Tegneserie, not da:Manga. In east asia, we are using same word "漫畵/漫画"(both are same chinese letter. Traditional/Simplified) for comics, but the pronounciation is different. Manga is japanese pronounciation for "漫画", and it means japanese comics outside of japan. (In japan, it means comics.) Similarily, "만화" (en:Manhwa) means korean comics outside of korea. In en:, there are three "漫畵/漫画" pages - en:Manga, en:Manhwa, en:Manhua.

In korean wikipedia, to make it clear, I mapped en:Comics = ko:만화(Manhwa), en:Manga = ko:일본 만화(Japanese Manhwa) and en:Manhwa = ko:한국 만화 (Korean Manhwa).

And I run bots on Manga and Manhwa for other wikipedias, since it is easy to check the correctness. But I don't run bot on Comics to prevent unaimed mistakes. -- ChongDae 18:21, 28 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

However, I want to ask one favor -- could you please have your bot alphabetize the wikilinks in its summaries, so that (say) 'Modificado: zh, tl, no, gl, eo, vi, sl, nds, bg' shows up as 'Modificado: bg, eo, gl, nds, no, sl, tl, vi, zh'? This way, it will be easier for humans to go through and 'spot-check' any changes your bot is making. Almafeta 07:34, 1 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Can you please translate this fundraising letter (Fund drives/2005/Q3 planning/Fundraising drive letter/en) for Wikipedia into Korean? If you are too busy, can you find someone who can translate it. Thanks Danny 10:37, 15 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Fluor

edit

Why did you remove the fa: interwiki link on nn:Fluor? [5] --EIRIK\talk 15:02, 26 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Because the page in fa is about "Carbon"! -- ChongDae 11:49, 27 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bot question

edit

Hi. Your Chobot made an edit in sr (Serbian) wikipedia. Namely, it found a doubled article, erased one of the two and made a redirect. The problem is: we didn't know the two coexisted and both have different facts, so merging would be optimal. After I have seen your bot's edit, I merged the articles, but I'm writing to you to prevent such further happenings. So, I was wondering if you could just notify the community or just me, e.g. by creating a log of doubled pages instead of erasing them (and then redirecting). Thanks in advance. --Dungodung 12:00, 27 August 2005 (UTC) (but I'm more active here.)Reply

I see. -- ChongDae 13:14, 27 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Your bot made an weird edit here:

20:30, 1 September 2005 (hist) (diff) m Kirchhoff's laws (robot Adding: ko Removing: ar, fr, ja, pl) (top)

Is it suppose to remove ar, fr, ja, pl? --AllyUnion 07:05, 2 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Furthermore, your was approved to run on en, but was restricted to add and modify only Korean links. --AllyUnion 07:10, 2 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
ar/fr/ja/pl pages are about en:Kirchhoff's circuit laws. So I've remove them from the en:Kirchhoff's laws. -- ChongDae 09:35, 2 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Not sure if you have seen this: I filed a bug2867 a while back with a patch to solve this exact problem - interwiki's sorting. I think the patch that i submited should be revised a bit to allow for admins to change sorting order without changing php files. Please take a look and contribute if you can. Thanks!

Mass Inerwiki Linking

edit

Hi, I don't think that that mass linking to other Wikipedias - some with some dozen articles ...  ;-) - as done by Chobot on de:1865 and others was a good idea. That looks completela ugly (at least with skin "Classic". and is not useful. We are just discussing that here. -- Rainer Bielefeld 05:29, 7 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

hanja in templates

edit

hi, just wondering why you reverted my deleting of hanja from some templates. as i explained in [6], i made the change when nobody objected in the discussion.

i don't see why we should have hanja in most cases. north korea does not use them at all. south korea rarely uses them. they are usually not on street signs or guidebooks or general webpages. remember this is the ENGLISH wikipedia, not for korean or chinese audience. even hangul is not really necessary, but just shows what it looks like in the local language. if hanja is sometimes necessary or relevant, it can be in the article, but i don't think it is for most korean topics. 71.139.178.75 (Appleby) 14:56, 16 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi! You also seem to be interested in SVG flags, so I thought I could come to you with my problem: The Korean Wikipedia seems to use a template system similar to ours for including country names with flags in articles. The only problem is that it's horribly difficult to find out how to change links to the obsolete file... Could you do that? The obsolete images still used by ko: are Image:Flag of Marshall islands.svg, Image:Flag of Comoros.svg and Image:Flag of Czech Republic.svg. Thanks! en:User:Nightstallion, 09:16, 25 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! You wouldn't happen to know someone who could do the same for the Estonian Wikipedia, would you? en:User:Nightstallion, 13:49, 26 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
Never mind, got them to do it. Thanks again! en:User:Nightstallion, 16:49, 26 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
Another few changes, these should be the last one: Image:Flag of Taiwan.svg to Image:Flag of the Republic of China.svg, and Image:Flag of China.svg & Image:Flag of Peoples Republic of China.svg to Image:Flag of the People's Republic of China.svg. Thanks! en:User:Nightstallion, 11:08, 27 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
I won't say "this is the last one", since I've been wrong every time I've said it, but... Please change Image:Flag of México.svg to Image:Flag of Mexico.svg. Thanks a lot for all your help! en:User:Nightstallion, 15:34, 28 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
No problem. -- ChongDae 18:01, 28 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Chobot's IP

edit

Since Chobot is an approved bot, I've unblocked the IP. I don't know too much about our bot policy, or really how bots work, but I think if you are having this problem, you should alert en:wikipedia:bots and see what they think or if there is a solution. Bots are never supposed to be editing from an IP address. Sorry about any inconvenience. Please direct any replies to my Wikipedia talk page. Thanks. en:User:Dmcdevit

Laute and Ud

Hello ChongDae,
Chobot sets wrong interwiki-links in the german article "Laute" for tr: and ar: since Ud and Laute (lute) are different instruments.

You removed erroneously it:Mu from the interwiki link list. Please correct your bot. - de:Benutzer:Jörg Knappen

It is intentional. I think that it is better to link it:Mu to de:Mu. What's your opinion? -- ChongDae 09:03, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Unjustifiable removal!

Hello, can you please explain to me the reasoning behind the removal of the Greek translation (el) of Nouachott, in the homonymous article? Just wondering... 213.16.202.2 17:09, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
