What is literature?

The term literature comes from the latin word 'litteratura' which means writing. Littera in itself means letter. Hence, in the widest  sense, literature refers to all writing or printed matter which may be representations of diverse thoughts. Generally therefore, literature refers to the collective body of writing books on all subjects history, chemistry, sociology, physics, political science, biology, philosophy and the rest.
