Almost all of these users (250 million) visited Wikipedia. In addition, comScore estimates the June 2008 audience for other projects as follows: Wiktionary 5.1mm UVs, WikiBooks 2.7 million UVs, WikiQuote 2.1 million UVs, WikiSource 1.9 million UVs, and WikiNews .6 million UVs.

Regional breakdown of reach

edit

comScore estimates the percent of internet users who access one of our projects. Here's the breakdown for the different major regions that comScore tracks:

  • Worldwide -- 29% reach (251 million out of 861 million unique visitors)
  • Latin America -- 41% reach (26 million out of 63 million)
  • Europe -- 37% reach (89 million out of 242 million)
  • North America -- 32% reach (58 million out of 185 million)
  • Middle East - Africa -- 27% reach (12 million out of 44 million)
  • Asia Pacific -- 20% reach (66 million out of 327 million)
  • India -- 20% reach (6 million out of 29 million)
  • China -- less than 1/2% (less than 400k out of 107 million)

It's important to note this is not reach of the entire population, but just of the online population. So in Asia Pacific, for example, comScore estimates there are 327 million internet users in total, of which 66 million (or 20%) used one of our sites in June.

Demographic breakdown

edit

comScore estimates the percentage of different demographic groups within the internet audience that visit our sites. Compared to our overall 29% reach, here's the detail by age range:

  • Age 15-24 -- 30%
  • Age 25-34 -- 26%
  • Age 35-44 -- 29%
  • Age 45-54 -- 33%
  • Age 55+ -- 30%

Engagement

edit

comScore also estimates how many times our projects were visited by each unique visitor during the month. According to its estimates of this "engagement" metric, our sites averaged 3.8 visits per visitor during June. This is low compared to other top sites (Google at 26 visits, Microsoft at 21, Yahoo at 19, AOL at 11, eBay at 6, Fox at 10). In general, our metrics on engagement are significantly lower than other major sites, suggesting that users visit our sites to look something up and do not come back regularly the way they might to an email, search or news site.
