Comparison to other data sources

It's interesting to compare the the comScore data to other data sources and try to understand the differences. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Statistics and http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Statistics for many of the alternatives. Other comparisons/discussion welcome!

Alexa

As of August 2, Alexa has Wikipedia at #7 in "popularity" and the domain name wikipedia.org at #8 in the 3-month average "traffic rank" (i'm not really sure of the difference). When you combine related domains above us on their list (Youtube is part of Google, Windows Live and MSN are both Microsoft), we end up at #5 as we are using comScore's concept of a "Property".

We can also compare estimates of average daily reach. While comScore analysis typically focuses on monthly unique visitors, they also produce an average daily visitors datapoint which was 25 million in June, or 5.4% reach of total average daily users. This is lower than Alexa's estimate of average daily reach which is currently just over 8% (after some methodology swings that brought us down from just under 10%). I checked Facebook.com and there is a similar difference -- comScore has it at 6.9% daily reach for June while Alexa has around 9 or 10% -- so maybe there's some methodology issue that has Alexa suggesting higher daily reach than comScore.

Breakdown of regions

Hoi, Latin America includes Mexico but so does North America. Throwing the Middle East and Africa on the same heap is not helpful. Typically only Egypt can be considered part of both. I am really interested in knowing how Africa on its own fares. I am sure it is worse then projectd

When you have figures like this, it may give a clue where are traffic is and also what we can do to improve our traffic. What is of real interest to me are the most requested articles per project that do not exist.

I asked comScore about this and unfortunately those are the regional categories they use, but they did send the components of each region so at least we know what's counted where. How to get data?

Hi, I am interested in getting data about visits in a month from say the 50 biggest countries and to the 50 biggest wikipedias. How can I do that? --Sotiris 23:20, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

This PDF of trend info is the most detail we've gotten from comScore. Erik Zachte also has a great summary of page views, though that doesn't have breakdown by Visitors or geography.Stu 10:15, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for posting and analyzing this data for us. I find the 0.02% of visitors as active editors stat particularly horrifying. I knew it was low, but that low... I guess part of me is still stuck in halcyon 2003.
