Telling your program stories - all programs
editIn collaboration with Madhav Gadgil, Subodh Kulkarni and Prasanth Pawar, A2K started a project to improve Village stub articles with Census 2011 information to start class. A2K conducted Discussion forums with Madhav Gadgil and team mates to Telugu Wikipedians & enthusiasts and facilitated online discussions about the data available and desirable style guide of the article. Telugu Wikipedian User:Bhaskaranaidu who is contributing to Telugu Village stubs for years, found this project interesting and useful to Villages. He is currently improving Village articles of Chittoor District.
The Google-translated Telugu articles prioritization is an online exercise intended to prioritize and improve over 1,900 machine-translated articles on Telugu Wikipedia. Google Translated Project initiated by Google in 2009 resulted Over 1900 machine translated articles which mostly are considered to be of poor quality. Some Telugu Wikipedians tried to improve Google Translated articles from 2010-11. Jointly organized by the Telugu Wikipedia community and CIS-A2K, this exercise saw the participation of 4 Wikipedians.
CIS-A2K's pilot project of targeting Interest groups by conducting workshops to individuals and groups of experts of various fields like sports, science, literature, films, etc., as an attempt to cultivate new editors and improve quality content in Wikimedia project continued. Online and on-site mini-workshops both have been conducted for the communities of interest in Geology and Film Studies. Workshops were conducted in Educational institutions located in various places of Andhra Pradesh like Guntur and Rajamahendravaram. Workshops in Jagarlamudi Kuppuswamy Chowdary College, Guntur and Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajamahendravaram were conducted.
Content donation drive started in June 2016 lasted 2 months, resulted in relicensing of 17 books to CC-BY-SA license. In collaboration with Manasu foundation and Andhra Loyola College, we conducted a scan-a-thon where Dr. Kola Sekhar scanned 12 books relicensed out of a collaboration with ALC. The Telugu Wikisource proof reading sprint started with a workshop on 18-20 November 2016. In the event, students learned to OCR and to proofread the OCR-generated text in Telugu Wikisource. Telugu Wikisource Workshop which was planned to conduct in this grant period was been conducted in July 2017.
Strengthening Existing Community
editAccording to the suggestions from Telugu Wikipedia Community, CIS-A2K carried out small scale workshops in Hyderabad Monthly meetups. Participants were trained in Tools like Prep-Bio, Twinkle, and Wiki-to-do. Some of the community members who requested for specific and individual training were given such training on the aspects that are needed to improve their Wikipedia Contributions (like Editing with the Visual editor, etc.,). User:Nrgullapalli who took one such training stressed the importance of individual training to very active Wikipedians because they are contributing to Wikimedia and will also continue to contribute.
Meet-a-Wikipedian initiative to visit a Wikipedian and provide training, discuss initiatives and understand areas of collaboration went well. This enabled Wikipedians like User:Nrgullapalli to learn about policies and guidelines on how to give interwiki links in a better way using the visual editor, User:Bhaskaranaidu to collaborate in Village articles project and User:స్వరలాసిక to get necessary resources. From Program point of view, this is helping us to understand needs and issues, view and vision of various community members.
A project to create and popularize Video resources for Telugu Wikipedia Project was started and some of the screen captured videos were created by User:Pavan santhosh.s and User:Chaduvari. Efforts to coordinate this screen-capture video resource creation was done using a Project page.
Content Generation
editTo complete my 100Wikidays these resources have been useful, apart from that I thoroughly enjoyed creating articles on History & Personalities of Drama in and around Tenali and I thank (you) for providing me the resource
Providing resources for Wikipedians improved content in Telugu Wikipedia and also support of these resources helped 2 of the Telugu Wikipedians (User:Pranayraj1985 and User:Meena gayathri.s) to start 100 Wikidays and complete it. Later on that one 100 Wikidays of these two participants resulted more 100 Wikidays and even they experimented different themes in that framework to improve articles related to Women & Telangana.
During 100 Wikidays, Participants will experience a fear of running out of ideas and material apart from fear about not having time. Even that fear will prevent people from taking up such a committment. For me, having resources on hand helped me to get out of the fear and to commit for the challenge. Anyway after starting, I successfully completed it twice and lost once
Telugu Wikisource
editA2K conducted Wikisource workshop to Student Wikipedians of Andhra Loyola College where student Wikipedians learned how to OCR, process of Proof-reading the Wikisource pages. Later student Wikipedians started contributing to Wikisource every day after 3.40 PM in college lab for 1 or 2 hours and proof-read nearly 3,500 pages in Wikisource. This Wikisource sprint was encouraged by College Principal and Staff. Later when we co-organized an event to make people aware about Free-licenses in College, Student Wikipedians who proactively proof-read pages of the books were appreciated by the authors who relicensed these works.
To relicensing & digitizing works, criteria was developed and a strategy is being followed. According to it, Content, Participation and Work to be done are 3 broad criteria. Content of work can be graded into Reference material for Wikimedia Projects, Classics & Popular/Readers' interest content into a grade, remaining content will be another. Priority in content wise will mostly be decided via Wikisource Village Pump discussion. Regarding Work to be done, Works are classified into Unicode Proof-read text, next to OCRable clean PDF, later book without good pdf copy. Finally 3rd broad criteria is about whether book is attracting any volunteer (can be even authors themselves) to proofread or scan & upload or index work or not. This helps to make process easy.
Improving Quality
editTelugu Village Project improved quality of content available in more than 300 Village articles. Village articles improved currently got the information about Education Infrastructure, Government and private health facilities, Drinking water, Sanitation, Communication & Transport facilities, Market & Banking, Health, Nutrition, Recreation, Electricity facilities, Irrigation, Land Use and Manufacturing. On bringing Community Members, Technical Experts, and Free Knowledge Enthusiasts together Open Data is being utilized as a source to improve Telugu Wikipedia as a knowledge base.
Cultivating New Editors
editA2K conducted a pilot project to conduct Mini Workshops to "Communities of Interest", group of experts in various fields or cult groups interested in a field of interest and working in online platforms. Learnings of this activity helped to recruit volunteers who have expertise and interest in respective field.
Workshop in JKC College was followed up in a Whatsapp group which consists of Newly registered Student Wikipedians and an Active Wikipedia Editor from Community. But the attempt saw a failure in engaging student Wikipedians in Wikipedia related discussions and Whatsapp Group resulted forward messages and discussions that have nothing to do with free knowledge or Wikimedia Projects. Learning from this attempt, Whatsapp Group with participants of Telugu Wikisource Workshop (happened in July 2017) created with a mix of Existing Wikipedians and added only Interested Wikipedians which turned out to be a better way to engage participants in Social Media.
Wiki Loves Mayabazar event aimed to increase participation and content by utilizing interest of Telugu speaking-areas in Cinematic arts and call for commemorating the classic movie "Mayabazar" by documenting it in Telugu Wikimedia Projects. But as we tried to recruit new editors via a call for action in Social Media and Media fronts. Offline event & Online Edit-a-thon was covered by reputed Telugu media houses and Created a drive in Facebook which was shared by several writers who has following. But finally, the event resulted in only Social Media engagement and not much in terms of On-Wiki activity.

Resources
editResources to plan for measurement
edit- Global metrics are an important starting point for grantees when it comes to measuring programmatic impact (Learning Patterns and Tutorial) but don’t stop there.
- Logic Models provide a framework for mapping your pathway to impact through the cause and effect chain from inputs to outputs to outcomes. Develop a logic model to map out your theory of change and determine the metrics and measures for your programs.
- Importantly, both qualitative and quantitative measures are important so consider both as you determine measures for your evaluation and be sure to ask the right questions to be sure to capture your program stories.
