I'm Maarten Billemont; a Belgian software developer.

Expertise

edit

I'm an experienced UNIX user, the author of the BashGuide and BashSheet and several other Bash related articles. I maintain Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X boxes and do most of my software development on them.

I'm proficient at Java and Objective C development, specifically for server-side and mobile applications.

I'm also an experienced designer with years of expertise working with HMTL, CSS and other web technologies.

Software Ideals

edit

I believe software should be free and open to everyone.

I believe code should be clear, transparent and non-obfuscated. It should always convey intent. I believe programming language should be written with as much consideration for human readers as prose is.

Political Ideals

edit

I believe in personal freedom for everyone to live their lives as they prefer, so long as it does not infringe on the personal freedom of others.

I also believe strongly that Socialism is absolutely required for a civilization to remain prosperous and guarantee everyone's fair chance at personal freedom.

I believe an ideal system of government does not yet exist, but that we should be unafraid to find one that can. I believe any successful system must apply human behaviour, not fight against it. I'm convinced Capitalism works well because it applies human greed for the benefit of all. I'm convinced there is a better system that can be derived by combining all human behaviour for the good of the collective, specifically the human desire for social interaction, the sharing of wealth and experience.
