Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon March 2022
editWhat, When, Where, How:
CIS-A2K conducted 4th all India level online Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon in March 2022 on Wikisource to enhance the skills, awareness, and encourage to work on Wikisource of Indian language Wikisource contributors. This was fifteen days of Online Proofreadthon in March 2022, where the participants contested among their language-specific an all-India basis. Before start this contest we conducted one online Wikisource meetup on 19 February 2022.
We have 12 Indic language base Wikisource. But, all communities don't have any experience with the online proofreadthon and never organized such events. So CIS-A2K conducted the all-India level online proofreadthon to support the community to grow at the same level as others. But every language community has a different quality standard as per its policies. Most of the communities are at the infant level compared to others with respect to proofreading (MOS of layout and checking the error of OCR output). So this online edit-thon had helped the community to compare with other qualities and rectify to set the proper Wikisource standard.
We announced the same format for this session. Each community selected their books to be proofread by the 92 participants. A total of 162 books were proofread in this contest. A total of 12,241 pages and 3592 pages were proofread and validated respectively. Below is the statistics graph of the contest. In this contest total of 12 Indic Wikisource communities participated.
Impact:
We organized three Wikisource Proofreadthons during lockdown period from year 2020 to 2022. The contest was very healthy and competitive to continue to approach and support the community. This contest was a completely online mode and generated significant contributions to creating their native language resource. The community realised their strength and weakness, what need to do, and what was the drawback. out of 12 Indic Wikisource communities, 10 communities contributed to this contest.
Learning:
- There is only one tool to generate the stats of this contest. Still, that tool is in the developing stage, this contest tool is called indic-wscontest. And another wscontest tool is not working properly. So it is so difficult to show and compare the running stats and progress of each communities.
- Before the March 2022 edit-thon, The IndicTechTeam developed/improvised a good contest tool that is workable for the contest. But still, there is some issue we are facing.
- The stats are not updated spontaneously or in real-time mode ( as other Wikipedia contest tools like [fountain] work), because Wikisource data schema differs from Wikipedia. There is one phabricator task T173012 is listed to fix this issues.
- Coordination between the 12 language communities is too complex in nature. Every community has unique issues regarding each section, like the selection of books, reviewer action, and maintaining the quality text proofread/validation.
- Maintaining the quality control of Wikisource was a major concern during the contest time.
Follow-up
- From the learning, we conducted the RFC for Indic Wikisource to understand the community pulse. We will be planning to conduct the 5th Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon November 2022 this year.
Wikisource Community skill-building workshop
editAfter Indic Wikisource Community Consultation 2018 in Kolkata in 2018, the CIS-A2K conducted the basic level Wikisource workshops in different languages. Among them were Punjabi Wikisource Workshop, Patiala, Gujarati Wikisource Workshop, Ahmedabad Marathi Wikisource Workshop, Pavel, Tamil Wikisource Workshop, Salem and Assamese Wikisource Workshop, Guwahati Wikisource community. CIS-A2K conducted all these Wikisource workshops in 2019. Last 2 years of the pandemic, we have not conducted any on-ground events. This year we have started off-line and on-ground events with 2 skill-building advance level workshops and community interaction as below.
This skill building workshop is must needed for each community in future for their encouragement and moral boost motivation. Every community have a unique issues and problem regarding their. Each language community have very small community member who are used to contribute in wikisource. So we have to support them to grow with conducting this kind of skill building and sharing interaction. This consultation and skill building interaction may help to support to grow them. Out of 12 indic wikisource language community, only 6 communities are more active. So we have to revive rest of the in-active communities.
Punjabi Wikisource Community skill-building workshop
editWhat, When, Where, How:
Punjabi Wikisource Community skill-building workshop was conducted by CIS-A2K in collaboration with the Punjabi Wikisource community from 14 May to 15 May 2022. A total of 12 number participants were present where 5 were female participants.
Impact:
After 3 years, this Wikisource advance level workshop was conducted, so the community involvement was very pleasant.
Learning:
Although all the participants were active in Wikisource, they don't have a few things regarding the tool and PDF file process and Pagelist Gadget.
Follow-up:
The iterations of this workshop are planned for the next program year.
Assamese Wikisource Community skill-building workshop
editWhat, When, Where, How:
Assamese Wikisource Community skill-building workshop was conducted by CIS-A2K in collaboration with the Assamese Wikisource community from 10 June to 12 June 2022. A total of 15 number participants were present where 5 were female participants.
Impact:
- This was the 2nd Wikisource Community skill-building workshop conducted by CIS-A2K in North-East India.
Learning:
- Small had a great friendship environment to conduct this workshop.
- Scanning facility should be required for the northeastern zone.
- Limited PD books available in Assamese Wikisource.
Follow-up:
- Relicensing and scanning are planned in the northeast. We are planning to conduct one another workshop at Dibrugarh University.
Indic Wikisource Community newsletter
editIndic Wikisource Community newsletter is a quarterly newsletter for the Indian Wikisource community and Indian book lover people. Indian literature in different languages has good heritage material but has not been published on the internet to date with searchable content. Still, Indian language content penetrations are less. As a result, Indian literature is not accessible to everyone. Wikisource is the only platform to publish literature and information in Indian languages worldwide. Therefore, the Indic Wikisource Community has been created to support the Indian language Wikisource.
