Where we are, and where we're headed

Ebola translations

The culmination of our efforts in 2014 were our translations of articles on Ebola into 42 (NUMBER NOT UP TO DATE) different languages

  • Reallocated resources: By having a dedicated community organizer we've been able to free certain editors from work here so that they can do work where they're able to have the biggest impact.
  • New goals:Our project has changed dramatically in the period of the IEG. We've moved from a focus on translating into a few in-depth articles into large languages to:

    • Google docs: We transitioned from using clunky Wiki mark-up tables to google-docs to enable more users to get involved in the tracking and integration of articles. Previously this had been a major issue for non-technical Wikipedians.
    • Template simplifications: Not all Wikipedias have access to the most common templates used when writing about medical or health subjects. For example the en-wiki Infobox Disease has a number of complicated or superfluous functions that we stripped to enable importing the templates on a massive scale.

As with any community organization project the goal has always been to get more users involved with improving the project. Also, because the project is on such a massive scale a significant time was spent getting up to speed with how things have been done, and how they can be improved. What are the results of your project? We helped spread and translate content into Please discuss the outcomes of your experiments or pilot, telling us what you created or changed (organized, built, grew, etc) as a result of your project. I worked to identify hurdles and things that blocked the progress of the project, finding and trying to remove roadblocks. This resulted in us:

  • Starting to collect proper data on translated articles (Article statsLanguage stats)
  • Moved tracking to google docs
  • Creating proper, detailed documentation

These efforts allowed us to scale the project and for the translation of articles into xx new languages, including over 50 articles on Ebola translated together with Translators Without Borders.
