My name is Ian and I am a Brazilian-American Wikimedian living in Casablanca. I have eclectic interests and I contribute in many areas, but I'm especially interested in languages, history, and Arabic literature. My passion for Wikipedia comes from its utility in the liberation of knowledge, in critical historiography, in covering ignored or neglected aspects of history, in the empowerment of oppressed people, and in dismantling oppressive structures.
"Quando a educação não é libertadora, o sonho do oprimido é ser o opressor."
"When education is not liberating, the dream of the oppressed is to become the oppressor."

"Le savoir n'est pas fait pour comprendre, il est fait pour trancher."
"Knowledge is not made for understanding; it is made for cutting."

"العقل الذي لا يتمرد على الظلم لا يبدع"
"A mind that doesn't rebel against injustice doesn't innovate."
"NESCIRE AVTEM QVID ANTE QVAM NATVS SIS ACCIDERIT, ID EST SEMPER ESSE PVERVM. QVID ENIM EST AETAS HOMINIS, NISI EA MEMORIA RERVM VETERVM CVM SVPERIORVM AETATE CONTEXITVR."
"To be unacquainted with what has passed in the world, before we came into it ourselves, is to be always children. For what is the age of a single mortal, unless it is connected, by the aid of History, with the times of our ancestors?"
-Cicero in Brutus
"This willingness continually to revise one's own location in order to place oneself in the path of beauty is the basic impulse underlying education. One submits oneself to other minds (teachers) in order to increase the chance that one will be looking in the right direction when a comet makes its sweep through a certain patch of sky."
-Elaine Scarry in On Beauty and Being Just
