InterWiki link translation
edit- Please note that w:en:User talk:Gangleri#From Mike.28z.29 = [[w:en:User talk:Gangleri#From Mike.28z.29]] links properly and w:en:User talk:Gangleri#From Mike(z) = [[w:en:User talk:Gangleri#From Mike(z)]] fails. Last will miss the HTML anchor / HTML anchor. Regards Gangleri 18:52, 2004 Oct 9 (UTC)
Note: Please note that inside en.wikipedia works properly. See w:en:User:Gangleri/remarks#proper link translation

Invalid InterWiki links (list?)
editDefinition / Preliminary:
- Please let me know what a Valid InterWiki link is and / or where to find a en:Syntax for it.
- At Help:Special characters? Gangleri 05:58, 2004 Oct 11 (UTC)
- If documentation has changed it would be a great help if there a Change history would be available too.
Note: Getting avare of an invalid InterWiki link could be browser / setup / configuration depending, somone can see the link and anotherone not. Using Status RESOLVED and Resolution WORKSFORME does not solve the problem.
- should they be listed at the source Wikipedia and target Wikipedia?
- should meta have a list about where these links are located?
- should a section drop a note at meta be available, if the language can not be understoud?
- should links to related known buzilla bugs (see section above) be included
Invalid links (lists)
editDefinition / Preliminary:
- they differ from one Wikipedia to the other;
- not all Valid links used inside one Wikipedia can be used as InterWiki links;
- See bugzilla:645 (and bugzilla:563). That example
w:ro:Discuţie Utilizator:Gangleri<> [1] use national special characters not for an article as w:ro:Timişoara == [2]. First one would fail, seccond would work.
- See bugzilla:645 (and bugzilla:563). That example
- Because there maight be not enough resources to specify all details in English (en:Syntax, Change history ...) it should be known whom to address if problems occur. Nevertheless for Wikipedias with the number of articles greather then x documentation should be available.
Note: many items from the section above aply, the distinction is only that these links are INSIDE a Wikipedia
- many xx.wikipedia should have an equivalent to en:Wikipedia:Invalid links and all should be linked together
- a list at meta should be available too
- should a section drop a note at meta be available, if the language can not be understoud?
- w:en:Wikipedia:Invalid article names added today: 21:45, 2004 Nov 9 (UTC)
Strategies
edit- Because of the existence of such links
- it should be investigated how these links have been created, what version of the Wikimedia software was used at that time, what browsers where used by the visitors / authors, how to avoid this in the future
- example: See [3] an entry created by en:User:Wiglaf
- I contacted him and hope to get some feedback [4].
- maybe a bot should detect the existing ones and liste them at known locations (mentioned in the new places)
- it should be investigated how these links have been created, what version of the Wikimedia software was used at that time, what browsers where used by the visitors / authors, how to avoid this in the future
- so far there are only en:Category:Wikipedia maintenance and / or en:Template:Wikipedia maintenance
- en:Repair and maintenance (and maybe also en:Maintenance) should mention en:Wikipedia:Maintenance.
- it should be possible to easyly find the pages also the new ones proposed either at meta Category:Wikipedia maintenance and / or meta Template:Wikipedia maintenance
- Maybe the pages could be called also "Where to ..."
- it should contain also:
- meta Dupilcate articles
- meta Multiple redirects
- Broken HTML code (see some sections above)
- and all the things causing problems
- Who takes care about what? Would be nice to know what person / group to address.
- ... most of the items from the maintenance section above applies
Cultural specific issues
edit- If you write about the German en:Chancellor en:Gerhard Schröder do not write de:Gerhard. He was called in this way in scool, by neighbours in childhood ... Use Chancellor Schröder or Gerhard Schröder.
- If you write about en:Björk do not write about her using Guðmundsdóttir, her en:fathername. When you write abou en: Einar Már Guðmundsson use first the en:full name later only the en:first name is:Einar or is:Einar Már. Writing en:Guðmundsson would remind him about the neighbours calling him the son of is:Guðmundur.
- If you link to a person in eo.wikipedia (where family names are written in capital letters) use the direct InterWiki link to Nobel Prize in economic sciences winner eo:Reinhard SELTEN and not a REDIRECTed spelling as eo:Reinhard Selten. You may miss the target.
- ... more examples should be added
(at meta)... - Some languages will use en:family name en:first name as Japanease, Hungarian ... . Of cause in the English Wikipedia the other form will be used. Attention should be paid only if Inter WIKI links are used. Example: hu:Bartók Béla == en:Béla Bartók.
- Hispanic names (also in Catalan ...) are using double family names. Attention should be paid only if Inter WIKI links are used. Example: ca:Joan Lluís Vives i Marc == en:Juan Luís Vives. Gangleri 23:28, 2004 Oct 11 (UTC)

differences regarding preview of new section / coment
edit- The preview of User_talk:Gangleri&action=edit§ion=new, User:Gangleri/remarks&action=edit§ion=new, ... should display the preview of the header too.
I have seen it working sometimes, in some Wikipedias somewhere ....
- It works (the title is displayed in the preview) if you edit an existing comment. Gangleri 21:33, 2004 Oct 11 (UTC)
about spam
edit- I was thinking a lot about spam. At many User:xxxx pages I have seen full e-mail addresses witten as 'address@domain.extension (minimal variant). Writing address at domain dot extension is very common. What about using images a template {{email|address@domain.extension}} would allow to have a common en:look and feel. different InterWiki behaviour
editw:ja:利用者:Gangleri#InterWiki, w:ru:Участник:Gangleri, w:ru:участник:Gangleri are working only in en.wikipedia and not in xx.wikipedia. Gangleri 01:41, 2004 Oct 23 (UTC)
