Hi I am sending this mail to all translators that already adhered to wikimaniatrans@yahoogroups.com with source language EN (an overview of participating people can be found here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translators_that_are_willing_to_co-operate) and to other interested persons/groups.

Now one of the next steps is to translate the wikibook for Wikimania 2005. The thing is: there could be updates and the easiest way to re-translate updates is using a CAT-Tool (Computer Aided Translation tool).

Link on meta for this project: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Wikimania05-book (for the presentations I am going to create an extra page).

The preferred CAT-Tool is: OmegaT (http://www.omegat.org/omegat/omegat.html. User group: omegat@yahoogroups.com Why:

  • it is open source and free of charge
  • it will have some very specific software pieces that will help us a lot in future (Maxym I'll contact you on this asap)
  • it is easy to use
  • it can be used on any operating system that supports java
  • most OS systems nowadays already have java installed - if not: you can do this for free

The result of this is that OmegaT is going to be used by a further community: that of the wikimedia contributors.

This means that the translation memories out of these projects will be made available on commons.wikimedia.org until it is possible to integrate them in Ultimate Wiktionary (I don't know if there were any news on this during the last days since I was not at Wikimania ... sigh ;-( ...) - anyway this will still need some time for development.

I will try to show the single non wikiphile translators how they can direclty work with the wiki - I suppose these will be more or less 1:1 explanations that will then be integrated in a how-to list.

This also means that at the beginning we will need some more days until everything works out well, but it is worth the effort - and it is a new adventure being part of the future :-)

Some translators will need a double support: fom the OmegaT side and the wiki side. This is the reason why I copy this mail to the OmegaT mailing list a well: be prepared ;-)

What else: hmmm... any translator who did not sign up to the "I'd like to participate list" of course is welcome to do so. The actual list of translators: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Wikimania05-book/translators (we would welcome any new language and of course also contributors to the "old" languages - up to now we have: ZH, NL, DE, FR, IT, PL, PT, RU)

A copy of this message is inserted on the project communications page: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Wikimania05-book/communications

If you have questions related to this projects, please let me know.

Ciao, Sabine
