Tajik Wikipedia

Has around 5,000 articles but does not appear. Could this be rectified? - FrancisTyers 13:16, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

It has been on the page, under the "100+" section, but no one noticed when Tajik reached 1,000, so it never got moved up. Thanks for pointing it out, though. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 04:39, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Search box

Depending on your resolution, the text above the search box, with "search" in different languages, doesn't look too good. In Firefox, the text is chopped of at "sø" currently, and in IE7, it is chopped of at "h" (in the Finnish text). Perhaps the text should be in two lines or something instead? Weird effect in IE7

In IE7 (haven't tested with other versions of IE), the main page scrolls sideways perhaps 10.000 pixels or something, but there's nothing to be seen on the side. Otherwise it looks normal (except for what's noted above). I first thought it was my recent edit that did it, but it wasn't. Does anybody feel like going error-hunting? I read on other places, that people keep having problems with this. Maybe 1100% is the reason. I modified the temp version [1]. Please look at http://computerprojects.biz/External/Wikipedia/portal.php and tell if the problem persists, thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 23:22, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Changes

I just updated the template in a number of ways:

  1. Bullets were changed to bold interpuncts. The bullets didn't display well in Opera (see screenshot).
  2. Padding was added around the horizontal rules to prevent them from extending all the way across the window.
  3. Some non-breaking spaces were changed from &#160; to &nbsp; for conformity.
  4. Some unnecessary CSS code was removed or corrected (ffffff is the same as fff and font-family isn't needed when it surrounds an image).
  5. The Go button was changed from a > to a › because it looks better. Also the font-size was changed from em's to %.

That should be everything. Cheers. --MZMcBride 03:23, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

font-family is needed around an image if the image depicts a wordmark (i.e., "Wikipedia") and you want the alt text to look somewhat like the wordmark. Otherwise, it all looks good. So I take it the padding you added fixes the problems in IE? – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 01:23, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
I didn't know anyone really saw alt text, but that's fine. The padding is around the <hr> tags because it looks bad when the line extends all the way across the screen. As for the books and the IE issues, I've spent quite a bit of time trying to come up with a decent workaround / fix and it's only made me more angry at the current hack. Would your suggestion of merging the books into a single image and putting them into the background allow for the removal of the width:1100% and left:-500%? If so, I'd be happy to make the updated images, and perhaps we can even mirror them for the right and left side of the text. Let me know. --MZMcBride 03:46, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
The alt text would appear if, for instance, upload.wikimedia.org is offline but wikipedia.org is online – that's actually a common occurrence. Using a background image would allow us to give the book rows a width of 100% (or something thereabouts). – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 07:02, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
That makes total sense regarding the alt text. I've created 8 images to be used for the background. Hopefully with these, you'll be able to modify the code to not use width:1100%;. The images are listed below. Cheers. --MZMcBride 02:06, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
  1. Image:Bookshelf-352x20-right.png
  2. Image:Bookshelf-352x20-left.png
  3. Image:Bookshelf-235x20-right.png‎
  4. Image:Bookshelf-235x20-left.png
  5. Image:Bookshelf-118x20-right.png
  6. Image:Bookshelf-118x20-left.png
  7. Image:Bookshelf-40x20-right.png
  8. Image:Bookshelf-40x20-left.png

Sorry, MZMcBride, I forgot to mention that each row of books probably needs to be one unified image, with a gap in the middle, rather than a separate image on each side. Separate images would work if we were able to specify a percentage offset from the right in CSS, but CSS only lets us specify percentage offsets from the left. I don't happen to have access to image editing software on this computer, but I'll combine the images when I do. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 18:00, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Adjustment for West-Flemish

Hi, the wikilinks says "West-Vlaoms" en redirects to vls:Ôofdpagina, while this should be "West-Vlams" and should link to vls:Voorblad. Could someone adjust this? Thanks! Tbc 15:45, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Language box

Hi everybody,

I quite often have to change the language of wikipedia, e.g when I am looking for a french personality who is not in the english wiki. Of course it's possible to go to the main page, but it would be so much easier if the 'language' box would not disappear when ou get the 'No page with that title exists' message. Why it is so ??

thanks, p7029

Are you referring to the "in other languages" box on the left side of most articles? That box only lists translations of the article you're currently viewing. It works by listing all the "interlanguage links" that have been included in the article itself, but if the article doesn't exist yet, the system doesn't have any interlanguage links to list. I suppose you could list a few major languages like French in the sidebar regardless (so the page "DoesNotExist" would link to fr:DoesNotExist). Administrators at the English Wikipedia are responsible for the "No page with that title exists" message, so I would leave a message at en:MediaWiki talk:Noarticletext. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 08:49, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
